hi, im looking at getting a 4x4 quad, and ive decided to go wiht a 400 class one, what one would yous suggest? im not buying a new one but one only 3 or 4 years old at the oldest, what quad would be the best in this category???
Utility: Bombardier/Can-Am Outlander, Yamaha Kodiak, Suzuki Eiger, and that's about all I can think of that are ATVs I would buy. The Eiger is good but the reverse gear is a bit high from what I hear (not a powerful reverse gear).
Sport: Kawasaki KFX 400, Suzuki LTZ400, Honda TRX 400, and those are the only sport quads I would buy for myself.
I have actually researched all the ones I listed and I narrowed it down to these being good atvs without too many things going wrong with them.

I really like the Honda Rancher 420 (fuel injection/water cooled), but you might have trouble finding a use one. The older Rancher 350 is no slouch, and there should be a ton of them on the used market. Mine is 10 years old and still as solid as the day it was new.
These have good old time tested gear-on-gear manual transmissions, with a super low 1st so you don't need a trasfer case. I have never felt like I needed IRS (I like the stability of SRA), and the torque sensing front end does just fine without lockers.
Red Rider is right. You don't have to have IRS and I have never owned an ATV with IRS. I forgot all about Honda! The Rancher is a proven quad, meaning it is one of the best. The only thing I don't like about it is the low ground clearance but if that's not an issue, a stock rancher would be fine! Bombardier/Can-Am will always be my first choice though but they tend to run high price wise, even when used.
