im new here at these forums and would like to just start off by saying hi. i have had dirtbikes all my life but now i think im going to buy a quad. But i am no stranger to 4 whellers, my freind has a kfx 450 and my best freind has a eiger 400. My big question is that if i get a kfx400 will i get stuck. me and my freinds ride in the trails and it can get a little muddy but in the summer there is some dunes and lots of strailt and fast trails. Ive decided to not get a 4x4 because you cant jump them and they weigh a little too much. So lately ive been looking at either a 400ex or a kfx 400. but i like the look of the kfx more. I weigh 225 pounds and am 6 feet tall. Will this quad be fast enogh. i dont need kfx 450 power but i came off a yz 125 and it would be nice to have more power than what that did but its not a huge deal. My main question though is will i get stuck in the mud. my freinds eiger 400 will go all day in 2wd and never get stuck but i suspect that might have something to do with its weight. also how deep of water can a kfx400 go in. i would like to go through some deep water but its not reqiered. maybe just up to thetop of the crankcase. thanks

First off, the KFX is no longer in production and was nothing but a Suzuki Z400 clone anyway, so look to the Suzuki forum if you want more info. That said, this is a nice machine. Handles great, good suspension, good power, and tons of hop-up potential in this engine! The engine is proving to be very reliable.

Just keep the water below the air intake level....but keep in mind that this engine loves to run with its airbox lid off! I like the EHS Racing lid with Outerwears, but it isn't waterproof.

I'm no mud rider (thank God!), but the biggest thing is going to be ground clearance under the rear axle. Taller/mud specific tires (and a gearing change) might help.

You also mentioned the 400EX. It is a sweet machine and handles great. (Actually, the Z400 is a 400EX knockoff in terms of frame geometry/handling, but with a faster engine.) Dead solid reliable....absolutely the highest quality machine I have ever owned!

The EX is probably the best tight trail quad of all time. Its engine is torquey and will lug down, so you just put it in 1st gear and idle through the semi technical stuff. The Z on the other hand likes to rev (but not as much as the 450's), so it requires more clutch work on a tight trail. The Z has more speed on the top end.

i forgot to tell u guys that im buying it used. im looking for one for around 3300 to 3600. like you guys have said hondas are vetry reliable but they dont come with reverse. the newer ones do but the one that i would buy would probably be pre 2005. so i think kfx 400 is better for me. and also why dont they make the ltz/kfx 400s anymore what quad is going to replace them.
