hey katie. it really depends on what type of racing, since u mentioned making it wider im guessing mx. in that case its hard to look past the ltr. especially if ur on a limited budget. its already wide plus a cherry bomb and exhaust and those things rip. if u have deep pockets i would say get a yfz and deck it out. thats what i would do. as far as gear. obviously nerf bars and a helmet. i would also highly recommend boots. they protect not only from debris but also act as a brace. i would also get a chest protector gloves and yes a neck brace. especially if ur competitive it gets pretty rough out there. its just cheap insurance, no need to take chances on getting hurt if u can help it. check your track though, they will tell u what u need to wear and whats optional.

Welcome to the forums Katie.
I'll presume MX also.
Like mentioned, the LTR comes wide. The new KTM's are the best today IMO. My daughter is racing a Polaris 450S this year. They have KTM motors and are fast. Honda's have the reputation for dependability that the others wish they had. The Can-Am 450 is what I'd get if I couldn't get a KTM.
IMO, a stock machine will do you well to start.
All will need nerf bars and tether switxch (except for the KTM). A pipe (Sparks) will be your first add on. Shocks (PEP of course) will be needed if you plan on long term racing.
We run Maxxis MX tires on Douglas wheels.
Like mentioned, helmet, boots, goggles, gloves, and the Leatt neck brace are needed. All but the neck brace is mandatory at most tracks.
