OK!! Lets see who is serious about there LT230s Performance.
Who has upgraded there stock carb? What brand is it and where did you get it? $
Overbore or Big Bore? " "
Exhaust?
Twist or Thumb throttle? Why? " "
Upgraded shocks or other boinger components? Do you see a pattern here?
Tires/wheels? Why? (favorite brand or just a good deal)? "
Have you widened and/or streched your QS230? Why?
Any thing that I overlooked. """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Do/did you race? I've heard of ice racing these machines, but where I live you never see that much ice.

I have noticed, that most often folks that own these machines are first time or entry level riders. But every now and then you see somebody that was old enough to ride when these units were new and there holding on to there beloved zuk. I remember haveing a sales flyer of a 85 LT250R on my wall.

The very lucky entry level or first timers that received a "hand-me-down" or picked one up cheap because it needs work could benefit from our, uhhh, your experience with these machines.
Yes you can search through old threads to, maybe, find the info your looking for but whats the chance?
Who knows, you might just help make up a mind or two to keep theres in a good state of tune or even buy one to bring back to life.
Oh, and if you have pics of a project QS230, either past or present, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.
BigMc

Built my 230S over the summer last year (2005) from the ground up ( rolling chasis and the engine was in a 5 gallon bucket), I probably have the same stuff as half the folks that have one of these:

DG exhaust
Rejetted carb ( factory carb )
Dick Ceppeke low profile tires, chrome rims ( not sure of brand )
rear sprocket 39T
front sprocket 14T

In search of after market swing arm to extend it probably about 3-4 inches.
Probably will get it bored out this summer during bike season, but for now I am going stock for the winter.
Still undecided if oil cooler is worth the money or not.

yeah, I kind of got screwed during the building process. My digital didn't work so I had to use my camera phone to document the process. I am waiting on Verizon to help me figure out how to send them to my CPU so I can download them. My only other option is to download pictures of the completed quad, now that I broke down and bought another camera it shouldn't be too hard.

I actually spent most of my time on "exotic" dirt bikes but the 1st thing I ever owned was a QuadSport, so that was the reason for my rebuild. It's just a fun little machine to tinker with..

Sahzookee, I know the feeling. i built my machine when i did not know there was a thing such as atvconnection. I wish i had my 3 year rebuild on record but thats a loss..........................anyway. Like to see the finished pics all the same.
I agree with AtomicPunk on the tinkering issue. They are fun to play with.

Atomic, I noticed you have an after market front bumper where did you find it ? I have been everywhere I know of trying to find one, even e-bay. One guy on here told me to get one made but I have little patience for going through all that. Thanks for any tips

OK! Now theres a long list of mods. That, MalHombre, has got to be the most spoiled ( good spoiled ) 85 I have ever seen. You have absolutly pampered that machine.
Ya know, the 85 was a first of its kind. Fully suspended, disc brakes, pure sport 4 stroke. Followed by machines that just built on a solid idea.
Like any good car restoration project, the first or last years are the best models to choice.
Where did you get that front bumper?
What did you do to get thet 32mm to work without loading up? When I got my carb I was considering the 32mm also, but was told by White Brothers that I would have problems with flooding. Quote " to much carb for that litte motor".
What main jet do you run?
I noticed in the pics that you dont run the stock filter box at all. Will you be doing much riding in wet conditions?
Thanks for the post and the input.

thanks Big! it's been a fun 4 yr project that turned into an obsession! heck, i'm even getting new red nerf nets custom made to match my graphics colors. i want to look good when i'm kickin' yurass!

i got the fr bumper on ebay, it was an old stock item from some cycle shop. it's made by PRM Inc. google them. they are still making that bumper for @$90 i think.

the 32mm carb is a seriously expensive venture but i'm tellin' ya, this thing will waste much bigger bikes (now i just gotta find a rider!) the biggest problem with the 230 head is that it's the head from the utility motor and the intake port is just a hole that dumps into a boxy little area where the intake valve is located. the mix enters and just swirls around and some of it gets sucked in when the valve opens. no real directional guidance towards the valve. kinda like the difference between a stock air cleaner and ram air induction on a car. my builder filled up that cavity with some sort of aluminum epoxy and then ground out a nice smooth round port right down around the valve, put a multi-angle grind on the seat area of the valve to help a little more with flow. the flange area on the head has to built up to mount a larger intake boot big enough to accept the carb. it's a stock 32mm from Sudco. came with a 200 mainjet and it runs a little rich and i figure once i get it broke in and tuned, it;ll prolly be around 180- 190.

the airbox project/problem turned out well once i found the right little tupperware container tha fit between the rails under the seat. i used central vacuum pipe and fittings for my plumbing. that stuff is super lightweight compared to standard pvc pipe and is plenty strong to take hits from a little gravel & mud. i run a UNI clamp-on w/ outerwears prefilter inside the tupperware and it's working good.

i'm not telling you guys any more

I have a 85. If i could figure out why it wont spark then i have a 270 big bore just sitting around that can be thrown in it. I already replaced the cdi and it worked for three rides and now it has zero spark

My first guess would be to trace all your wires and connections. If it ran fine and just quit it is probably just a loose ground wire. I have a 300ex that did the same thing. We just traced all the wires and found that one had unsnapped, reconnected and it fired right up. Good luck

Hey sahzookee like the pics, love the captions. You could have pulled the 230 with the wheelbarrow i guess.

NEWDUCK have you checked the coil? It may be far enough out of spec. to operate with a good cdi but quickly tax it to a point of faliure. My book shows it should read 0-2 ohms without the cap and 10-25k ohms with the cap.
Did you check the see if the primary and pick up coils are within spec?

Just curious. I did not know what kind of troubleshooting was done up to this point.

i picked mine up for $800! Good tires, ugly, but not broken white plastic, good seat and it starts and runs good. I just picked mine up for a 2nd wheeler for when my wife goes with us. She rides the Wolverine and I beat the crap out of the ZUK. It is great! I remember having an ad for one on my bedroom wall in 86. I do not regret getting it. I would like to fix the shifter and get carb update with a new filter intake set up. I am also interested in a blue hood for it. After that just run it until rebuild time so I can put a 270 kit in it.

BIGMC, I noticed it looks like you extended your swingarm yourself ( or had it done as oppose to buying one). I have considered having this done myself, the only thing I can't figure is what to do about the rear shock. Did you use one from another quad or did the original one bolt right back in. Thanks for any tips it will really help.

I will get some pics up soon, I do not have my own digital camera so I have to barrow the one from work. The only one is on my page where I am jumping it. Good jump, bad pic. My Friend thought there was a delay with the camera so he got me going up not on top of the arc. Oh well I will get more of those too! I am glad this thread got started as there have not been that many quadsport topics in the past. Very hit or mis. Have you heard of Vince's? It is a great site for Quad sport parts.
