How importat it is? Can I close it up? I just want to prevent water getting in oil tank. Maybe I can put T connector at slit place and join some hose.

I would imagine that it is real important seeing how the manual states engine damage if not done correctly. I have an 05 Sportsman 500 HO and I keep it in water and I haven't had any problems.

I replaced mine about 3 weeks back and my local auto parts store had a peice of hose they sold me for 3.00 bucks.
Replace the hose and you want have to worry later bout another problem at the connection points later.
Only took bout 1hour to replace al my hose except radiator hoses.

I'm not trying to thread jack but I can't find this hose on the quad. I just did an oil change by draining the oil tank, draining the engine, replace both plugs, remove filter, take new filter fill with oil screw on and add oil to the oil tank. I pulled the manual start a few times then started it up and ran it around the yard a few times. Did I do something wrong? I haven't gone for a long ride yet and I don't want to if I could damage the engine.

I'd have to say that if it takes pressure build-up to force the slit open, then water is probably not going to just casually get into there. Just my thoughts.

Yes I was thinking the same, that slit opens when it needs to open. But anyway this solution is insecure (better some kind of flap). And isn't it enough that hose goes to airfilter box? After very steep uphils there is oil in airfilter box, which isn't good. And after rollover all the frame is dirty with oil, which I guess ran out through this slit.
.22 the hose is on the other side's top of oil tank. If you don't disconnect any hose for cleaning, then it's not necessary do priming operation.

10/4 on if you don't remove the vent screen you don't have to worry about prime, but if you do clean the screen, better prime,i know someone who seized his cam.there is such low press.that any void+it might take a min or two to prime if you completly open the system unless you pinch off the vent hose.
