the newer ones you would need it for sure and i would guess the older one would want at least some battery in theree or i agree it will take out the electronics for sure.

One of my owner's manuals said that if you run a quad without the battery it can blow out lightbulbs and I don't know what else. All that electricity has to go somewhere if it's not charging the battery.

Maybe I'm missing something here but you have to have a battery of some sort to complete the electrical circuit.
I'm not so sure that the battery has to be in perfect working order though, I was under the impression that only the newer ECM equiped models had to have a perfectly good battery to keep everything running correctly...but I could be mistaken on this one.

You can short the batery cables to complete the circuit without a battery, but all the voltage that should be chaging the battery will go to your lights and other electrical parts instead.

The older models can run fine on a dead battery. My Battery was shot for a month before I got around to changing it, I just pull started the ATV and everything worked. I think the newer ECM (2004.5 and newer) models need a working battery though for the ATV to operate properly.
Kinda of a dumb improvement, a cheap ATV battery takes a dump and your walking or getting towed?

But you have to leave the dead battery connected don't you? I'm just going by what I've read and heard.
As far as a dumb improvement that's how cars work. I made it five miles with my old truck misfiring before it stalled out dead. I think my 1 cylinder quad would do better than the 10 times bigger V-8 did when it died. I hope I never find out, and I ran the quad to charge the battery earlier today. I should buy a tender for it.
