But it goes forward ok? is this a automatic (no gears) and has a black box mounted to the rear axle?

its a has a clutch and i think 4 gears but yea forwards works fine.... it has trouble goin in to 1st some times (know anyting about that?) you just have to shift up sometimes then down to get it into 1st or just beat it around a little..... as for the reverse like i said b4 it worked a few times but then stopped -- it was kind of progressive it worked -then worked and would slip out -then just doesnt work

But you say you put it into reveres and let the clutch out and you see the chain go around but the ATV goes nowhere? The rear sprocket is attached to the axle so if it goes forward it will also go back. Or does the chain just tighten a bit buy really does not move when you try to go back? How ever it does not sound too good and most likely is a bad reveres gear I'm guessing. Is this band new or used when you bought it. You can live without a reveres gear although the gear pieces are lying around inside there. The whole finding first does not sound too good. I would make sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly and replace the oil and see if that makes it easier to find first.
