I would love to hear some more about the trans/clutch mod. I worked on my sons 50 last weekend and did get some more out of it but was hoping for more.

I did the following:
rejet the main to an 80
cut the slide
changed out the throttle arm
new pipe and air cleaner
Procom CDI
added wheel spacers * 2" per side

I gained a total of 6 miles per hour (on GPS). It went from a top speed of 11mph to 17mph with me on it. ( 180lbs) which is around a 50% increase in top speed.

It feels much snappier once it gets going but its still a dog from a stand still and still dosent have the low end that I would like it to.

Will the clutch mod help and is it worth doing in your opion?

Thanks for the help.

if you done a clutch on a motorcycle before, its basicly the same thing. the roller balls sit behind the clutchs. make sure you keep the remaining balls (4) evenly spaced.

as far as performance, it helps. its not drastic but it helps.
i was expecting more.

with the mods you have done, you should notice more of a diference. i still need to jet the carb, get cdi, pipe, and air cleaner.

wheels and spacers are a must!!

let me know if you need some more info. i took some pic.

I'm new to this forum but have very interestingly followed the discussion. I have purchased a Raptor 50 (my state law doesn't allow anyone under the age of 12 to ride anything larger than a 50) and have recently started adding some of the mods that have been discussed here. I have noticed a good increase in power but not so much speed (because of the gearing). I know that larger diameter tires would help a little with the speed but I have recently started looking into possibly changing the trans/clutch to the 80. the cost seems to be high though. has anyone tried this change. I'd be interested in knowing how it has worked out and what specific components are needed.

welcome atvingnc

congrats on the ney toys!!! i dont care what all the others think, yamaha has a great and safe quad!!thats why i bought it!

we just need to make it a little better!

where are you located??

anyways, i brefly looked at the the parts scmatic last weekend thinking along the same lines.
my thinking is that there isnt much difference between the 50 and 80. the 50 has one gear, the 80 has 3. it looked like most of the components are the same. what i need to get is a service manual for both. if anyone has it could you let me know.

i'll tear apart the 80 and see if it works in the 50. i dont minde beeing the ginnypig!!
but i need the manuals!!

please let me know if you try this before i get a chance to.

i think it's a real posibility that yamaha used as many of the same parts as they could for both bikes.

hey guys i talked to al @ raptor80racing about droping the 3 speed tranny in a 50 he was pretty sure that the 80 and the 50 share the same frame and that you can allways drop egine and trans in to a 50 and end up with the 80 cc yamaha . so with that i trotted down to the local dealer and took a look and what da you know they are the same the big differnce is if you do a tranny swithc is you r going to need nerf bars after market or yamaha and thats it appartently it . on to some other tips i recently swaped out the stock ape hanger bars for a nice set of pro taper mini bars . my son says it feels alot better easy cheap if any body wants to do that hit me up i raised them alittle to with three washers on eacht nut in between the base of the mount and the top of the steering stem any happy riding every body

putter700r

I'm located in North Carolina.

I have put the Procomm CDI box, carb rejetting and throttle changes to Raptor 50 and I like the
power that it has. we went out and played in the mud this weekend and what a change from
out of the box. my son was spinning the tires and flinging mud all over the place with it.

there where some cheaper 50 and 90 knock*offs out with us also and I noticed that they where not
built as well. some of them stalled when going into the the deeper water where the yamaha handled
it ok. My only gripe is that the front suspension could have been designed a little better. I see the machine
leave the ground with one tire or another when he is going over some rough or uneven ground.

I used the rivamotorsports.com web site to research what components in the clutch, tranny and shifter
are different on the 80 then the 50 and I marked up the drawings. I found about 38 different or added
parts. I did see that the crankcases have the same part number so a changeover should be possible.
I compared rivamotorsports.com price to powerpartsplus.com and the powerpartsplus prices seems
to be lower but I'm still up in the air about the cost being worth it. you would also have to mod
the plastic or get nerf bars for the shifter. I'm thinking my next addition will be tires, rims and spacers.

You hit it on the head there. I think the quad is great as well with the mods but the suspension front and rear is a joke. The thing is way to stiff and I can see my son getting his ass handed to him on every woop. They need to design a softer all around better system. Am I alone on this one? By the way procomm is the way to go on the rev box. Big difference and you need to cut the slider. Those two things alone will do it. I wouldn't waist my time with the exhaust but that is your choice.
