I don't think the original poster is interested in knowing the answer. It's been 5 days and he hasn't made any comment yet. I would if mine broke.
The rear gear case components of BF are bullet proof. Sometimes I've seen the bearing retaining nut coming off inside and BOTH wheels losing the power. But in this case, there were key words:
"went though a few mud holes and heard a clank"
That's the sound of CV joint breaking when the slipping/spinning wheel suddenly gets a traction in the mud hole. I've heard and seen this before.
