Default newb needin some help

hey guys, I just bought a 2004 sportsman 500 HO and when i was puttin around it overheated, it seems like when I'm riding it the fan only runs when it wants to. It doesn't get warm when i'm goin down the road so i'm not sure what to look at now. I looked around and from what i was finding was the sensor in the radiator tells the fan when to turn on and off, is that correct? any idea's? thanks

All Older Sportsman's are known for the radiator clogging with mud simply because of its location on the bike. I am willing to bet its not a fan issue at all, more of a radiator that is simply clogged and not allowing it cool properly. This might not be the issue but well worth a look any whey!!! Good luck

Welcome to the forums.

I'd check the radiator for clogging like D57 said.

Check the simple things first.

It's not an optical illusion. It just looks like one.

Welcome to the forums!

I agree too on the radiator.. I've seen it happen before, and you can use a water hose to spray it out.

Good*luck!

i can spray some water though it tomorrow but when the fan is running i can hold my hand in front of the radiator and feel pretty good air movement. I really hope that's the problem though cause it would be a cheap fix.
thanks for the advice, i'll see if it fixes it this weekend when i have some time to putt around.

Having the same problem with my ATP. It's in the shop now. They had replaced the radiator cap and now they are looking at a sensor problem. Same kind of thing. Fan isn't kicking on before the HOT flash signal comes up. I'll try to let you know what they find.
