i noticed a little skrew on the bottom of the the 400ex's carb. the skrew itself looks as if it is a gold color. is this the pilot skrew? if so, which way do you turn it to richen it up a bit? thanks

There are several little SCREWS on the carb. Most carbs are set up so if you turn to the left they back out alittle and allow for a richer setting. The one thing you need to get is a shop manual before you start messing with anything. Read the process and than do it.

Hope that helps.

Well, there is a fuel/air mix screw on the bottom of the carb, but you cannot see it unless you have removed or somehow rotated the carb. It is gold colored, but so are the rest of the screws on the 400ex carb.

thanks for the help. i just noticed 2 skrews on the carb that looked like skrews that made adjustments. one is behind the choke lever and the other is on the bottom. i thought the one on the bottom was for air/fuel ratio but did not know what way to turn it. i thought clockwise would lean the system out and counterclockwise would richen the system, but i was told the opposite by someone so i am trying to clarify what is true. sorry for talking about a "little gold skrew" because i know there is many little skrews on the carb. thanks

Turn it all the way clockwise until it is shut, and then turn it open (counterclockwise) to richen things up. I think stock is about 2 turns. If you use a dynojet kit, they recommend 3 to 3.5 turns out. Without a dynojet kit, if you hit 3 turns, bump up the pilot one size and start over.
