For a beginner 16 year old atv rider which would you recommend? He hasn't had his own atv since he had a 90 when he was younger, but he rides atvs at friends houses regularly (most of his friends have 400s and above). He says that he is ready to make the jump right to a 400 but i'm not sure. He is also about
5'10 and 140 pounds. Should I let him jump straight to the 400 or make him learn on a 250?

 

I would go 400 if you trust his decision making. He has experience. He will outgrow the 250 quickly, like in 6 months or so.

 

my kids, about the same size as yours, have the TRX250EX, very light in the front end. hauls butt alright, but can be outgrown as stated. my daughter is 5'4" and it's perfect for her, my son is quickly approaching 6' and has moved on to the bigger polaris that i have. he handles my 450 grizzly just fine also.
