Default trx300 auto clutch wont disengage

I just recently "inherited" a old 89? honda 300 2x4 from my uncle.
He bought it brand new and it runs great but the auto clutch is not working at all, it just slams into each gear and its very hard to shift unless you have no load on the engine. The centrifugal clutch seems to be working fine.
I remember driving this thing years ago and it was the same way but it hasnt been rode very much so hopefully it hasnt damaged anything.

Does anyone have a digraph or picture if what makes the clutch work? I figure I better try and do some research before I remove the cover.

I tried putting it in 1st get and holding he brakes with it pushed up against a tree with my foot holding half way on the shifter and nothing changed.
if anyone has any info that would be great. thanks

Not a Honda guy,but worked on a few of the older ones. Could be it's been sitting so long the fiber plates may be oil saturated and stuck with the steel plates.Think there's an adjustment screw on the out side of the case, but may not help if they are.If changing oil and running a while doesn't help free it up,you may have to clean em up or replace the friction plates if you have to.Dirt Cheap Honda & Arctic Cat OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Outlet

Gonna be a clutch cover gasket at least involved that you'd have to replace, plus after market clutch plates(ebay, etc) are a lot cheaper than buying oem if they are needed. You can't beat a service manual so you have an idea as to what your doing and don't have to tear into something blind.http://www.ebay.com/itm/1988-2000-Honda-TRX-300-Fourtrax-ATV-Quad-CLYMER-MANUAL-/390876119999?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5b020843bf&vxp=mtr
