2004 400ex starting problems
I have a 400ex with a 440 big bore kit and stage two hot cams with a full dg exhaust and a eddelebrock carb series doug E. I got it for 750 bucks but cant seem to get it started. When I spray starting fluid it starts occasionally then immediately dies. Haven't changed the spark plugg yet but surely that be my full problem. I was thinking that the carb needs adjusted bit I can't find any specs for tuning any where online.

here is a good place for honda sports quad jetting info.

I think you should change the spark plug. If nothing else take out the one in there and see if you are rich or lean

Spark Plug Chops and Jetting
here is a website that shows pictures of what I am talking about. Basically the spark plug should be a tan color. If it is white you are running too lean and you know you need more fuel. If the plug is black you are getting to much fuel. It is a good starting point.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I said if it isn't starting the first thing he should do is check the plug. He asked how to tell the difference between a lean running and rich running condition. I found a website that had pics of plug chops with different running conditions. I was not suggesting he did a plug chop on a bike that isn't running. Sorry for the confusion.
