Unhappy 2005 Honda Rancher 350 ES

History ---This 2005 atv was my dads, he passed away last week, atv has 1007 miles

Problem--- It doesnt want to shift (sometimes) when it hangs up i have to use the
shift tool to go back thru the gears.
Sometimes that green neutral light just blinks at me and wont shift.

solution--- I have no clue.
1.Could it be battery voltage? Whats the correct voltage?
The atv cranks right up when you hit the starter button.

2. Is there a sensor somewhere?
Ive looked but dont know what im looking for.

3. could the push buttons for the gears be messed up.
They work and it shifts (sometimes) other times when you
hit the button to you here a click like a solenoid, but no shift happens

Any and all suggestions are appreciated
Thanks Eric

You need a healthy battery pushing 12Vs to make the ES work. Not sure about yours but my 2000 450es Foreman use to act up and not shift sometimes and removing a fuse from under the seat and reinstalling it fix the problem for some reason.

I heard of a angle sensor causing this also but Honda improved on it and a 2005 should have the improved version.

THANKS TLC! I will check that when I get back in town next week. I will repost at that time.

Your symptoms appear to be the the classic angel sensor going bad. In my opinion, Honda had a problem with a supplier on their 04 & 05 ES angle sensors. I changed mine in 06 after getting advice on this column about the same issues. I also know of two friends who had to replace their angle sensors on that age of machine. All have had no problems after the change.

So I put a different battery on last night after it charged up. The ATV shifts out fine so hopefuly its not the angle sensor but ordered one just in case it just havnt arrived yet.

I will put rtv glue around the sensor like most everyone else on this site have done and will go from there.
