Default 2005 trx300ex grinding on start up

Been awhile since I've been on here and I need some help again from you awesome guys.

I've had this thing parked in the building for about 9 months and it hasn't been started or anything since then. I know bad part on my end and that's why I'm gonna fix it and sell it, no time to ride like I wanted.

Before I parked the thing it was having a problem when starting up. It would make this horrible grinding type noise when you pressed the electrical start button. It got progressively worse and would do it every time you pressed the button to start it right before it went in the building 9 long months ago.

Obviously I first thought it was the starter and was gonna order one, but I decided to try to do a little research before wasting money and read it could also be my battery not holding enough of a charge and something to do with not enough amps to push the starter (as I remember, but may be off a little). Where I had this thing parked and didn't take battery out like your supposed to am I gonna need a new battery anyway and should start off with that anyway? Or is there a way to tell if this is the problem after all, if my battery isn't completely dead?

Basically, I wanna get it running right for as cheap as possible to sell it.

I appreciate any help, thanks for the read!
