Tire Pressure

I have 27 R14 ITP mudlite XTR and have absolutely loved them from day one, the look and the way they go through just about everything amazes me. The other day a group of us just started out on the trail, a little rocky but nothing major and I was warned by a friend following that my tire was going flat. Upon inspection it appeared there was a slash in the sidewall. Lucky me we plugged it with about 7 plugs and it got me through the day. My question is what pressure should I have them set at. On the tire it says max of 7psi. I have been riding with them at about 5psi to date. Which is harder on the tire, less pressure or more pressure, your guys experienced theories are more than welcome?

I have a 400EX, as you may see below...my stock tires did me just fine on the trails, so I went with them again. But anyway, I run the baseline pressure for my quad, which is about 4 psi. As far as more or less air hurting your tires, I think that's not going to be a proven fact, but just an opinion. I know guys that beat the crap out of their quads with stock tires and within the first week have three plugs in at least one of them....As for me, I don't "baby" my quad, but I have not one plug in any over the three years of ownership......One thing I can tell you about tire pressure is.....The less air, the more traction....also the more stability you'll have when pulling wheelies (more stability on a flat surface than a round one)....if any of this information helped you out, I'm glad. Like I said, you can't go wrong with running the stock pressure.

Might I ask as to how you know what the baseline pressure is, I understand the more stability thing, just curious as to guys opinions on the issue, thanks for the fast response.

I run 3 to 3.5 PSI all the time with my 27" Mud Lite XTR's. I find it maintains a great flat tread profile, respectable handling and even wear. Having too much air will cause the center of the tire to wear faster then the rest.

The baseline pressure will be on the rear fenders on a safety warning tag.....It''ll say 4.0 psi +-.5 psi, or something like that....or check your owners manual

You have to be carefull of pressures mounted on the ATV since they wont really apply once you change tire size and tire brand. The stock tires are small and very soft (often 2 ply) and need more pressure to be stiff for safe handling, good aftermarket tires are at least 4 ply most 6ply which require signifantly less air to be safe.

i like about 3.5 to 4 in the rear and 7 in the front.........the extra pressure in the front makes it steer better imo..
