here's the deal: fried rings, broken rings or bad valve seals. If I had to bet, I'd say it was one of the first 2. Either way it needs rings. I would change the oil once more. Be very accurate about it. Find out how much oil is burning of before the oil change and compare to after. If the new oil helps alot I'd say it is worn out rings. If not, I'd say a broken ring. Either way it is wearing out your cylinder, but a broke ring gouges the cylinder whereas wore out rings don't do near the damage. If not fubar a good mechanic should be able to clean up the cylinder .010-.020 and salvage the old piston. If not, you will need a piston. If that is the case don't bore over .030. I say that because that leaves you another .030 to rebuild agian. I got stuck with a 400 foreman bored .060 over and it needed rings. Because it was already bored.060 the mechanic said it was impossible to do a cleanup bore. he said I would have to buy a new cylinder. He said 800 bucks but I believe that was b.s. because I could buy a motor for that. As for the valve seals I can't recall anyone having any problems. It sounds like to me you're on bought time so baby it when you can, give her hell when you got to, and prepare for a rebuild. Keep oil in it. If you haven't got it real hot, I'd say you just got fried rings. It'll run forever like that as long as you keep oil in it. Good luck. Also, check into my atv insult post

what weight oil did you put in there?

maybe you are burning a thin weight and might want to try running something a little ticker........ on older machines there should be enough space in the tolerances to run a heavier oil.....

yeah man could be a gasket or rings or seals like they say,

so if you care about the engine, get it fixed properly..

if you want to buy time, but some lucas and some lucas stop leak in there,
and run some marvel or lucas gas treatment in the gas

10w40 is what I put in it. I changed oil and filter again today went for a ride for about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs and used about 1/2 quart of oil, and it is smoking really bad now, but still runs and drives perfect. I just don't want to destroy the engine so I am not going to ride it until I get it fixed. So it is a top end rebuild that I need ????
Thanks to all for your info...
