Default 400EX Hub nuts - help!

I know there are a lot of posts about removing axles etc and I have read most of them but I have 2 quick questions:

1) I can't for the life of me get the hub castle nut off. I have a 1 1/16" socket, WD40, and a breaker bar w/ a pipe extension to no avail. The quad's in gear and it actually turns the axle when I crank down on the bar...can that damage the transmission?

2) Those nuts are lefthand thread are they? I'm trying to turn them counter-clockwise w/ zero luck and was wondering if I'm just turning them the wrong way?

Any hints /trick /tips? I'm about to head back down w/ a torch to heat it up some. How much time is too much for the torch? Idon't want to damage anything...

I was thinking of going to the store to get an impact wrench but my air compressor's only 6 gal so I don't think it will work..

Thanks in advance!

I have a 300ex, and ran into the same problem.

WD-40 sucks for this..

I have luck with freeze off..

Also, i used a MASSIVE socket wrench, like the size of my arm
with a huge 1 1/16 socket, and it did not budge..

I than turned to my air impact gun,

I had to hit it and spray for like 15 minutes and than bam, it came off.

I would reccomend an impact gun for this only,
you know what im talking about right?
The air gun they use to take the wheels off of cars,
has that distinctive giant-dentist drill sound.

They make good electric ones too, ask your friends/family
and see if you can borrow one if you dont have it.

Dumb question.. but did you take the cotter pin out?

torch it as a last resort,
I dont think there is much there that the torch could damage however.

You would probably want it to start glowing red , at that point it has expanded and should come off..
try the above method first

You might not want it in gear, when using the air impact wrench. Use the parking brake, or wedge a block of wood in front of the tire. If you need to use for an extended amount of time, the chain and internal gears can be damaged by the repeated hammering/ shock wave from the wrench.
Make sure you retighten it back to about 100 ft lbs. They can be difficult to break loose, Ive used a pipe , slipped over the end of a breaker bar, to gain more leverage, and that works too.

I tried an impact wrench (rated at 275 lbs torque) and it just makes a banging/hammering noise and doesn't budge. Had it on for 1 minute and it didn't move it. Should I just leave the wrench on it and eventually it'll work it loose? I'm running the air compressor at 90lbs..not sure if that matters

I just want to re-verify: this hub nut is regular-thread right? Counter-clockwise to loosen right?

I've tried breaker-bar w/. pipe extension, torch, WD40, and now impact wrench w/ no success....I'm about to break down and bring it to the shop

Default 400EX Hub nuts - help!

OK, so I finally got the hub nut off (whatta pain!) and now have encountered my next snag: the disc rotor-hub.

I have the hub, axle lock nuts and holder ring removed and was under the impression the whole disc brake rotor/hub assembly should just slide off...and of course mine isn't. I've tapped the left side of the rotor w/ a rubber mallet and braced my foot against the swingarm and pulled pretty hard w/ no luck.

Am I missing something? Is there another trick here? The shop manual simply says "slide brake disc hub off axle"...big help!

I have pix here of what I'm talking about:

My quess is since everything else has been such a bitch so far, that this is also corroded on.

P blaster and a rubber mallet, and alot of patience.
Another set of hands with a mallet might also help, put pressure on both sides at same time
hit it both directions, and keep spraying

Might also try freeze off

P..S
if you heat this up with a torch, while it MAY work,
You are going to fry all the seals and grease inside that axle.
so Id advise against it,

once you get it off, clean the **** out of the spines and inside the rotor

Re-assemble with anti sieze , or a light coating of grease under the spines...
just clean and wd-40 the Threads for the axle nut, you dont want to grease those...

What are you getting at anyway?

Are you replacing Seals / Bearings?
Make sure you got all the o rings too, my guess is that they are shot, clean everything,
its only going to get harder untill you slide that carrier out,

If you clean and replace everything that needs it, next time should should be a breeze, and everything will stay in nicer shape longer
