Chain Case or No Chain Case?

Chain Case or No Chain Case?
Well, I'm beginning the rehabilitation of a 1986 TRX125 that I just got from a friend. There is a lot of stuff broken or missing on this machine, but overall, it is fixable.
One problem is the chain case, or rather the lack thereof. The inner case is there (between the chain and the frame) but the outer is completely missing. So, really the chain is just out there in the open.
I've looked around and haven't been able to find a chain case (yet). I still plan on getting one at some point when the opportunity presents itself (ebay), but I was just thinking about removing the inner half of the case and just running without any sort of cover.
I don't really have experience with this, but I see all the dirt bikes running around with exposed chains. Seems to me this would not be a problem. Am I right or am I wrong?
