You have to know the starting drill!!!
if it is electric start which mine is you simply pull out the choke press the throttle in and out 4 to 5 times. it is similar to priming it. then hit the start button and it should fire right up. If it dosent start then prime it with the throttle a few more times. if it dosent start when it is warmed up then you should bring it to a dealer. kick starting should be the similar drill.
Always remember to let your machine warm up for a few minutes too. Remember this is a high performance engine not like any old 400ex.

that drill seems like a good way to flood it and make it even harder to start...
ive had mine for over 4 yrs and have never recall having to prime it. flip up the choke if its cold, DONT touch the throttle in nearly any situation while starting and it fires right up within a couple kicks. let it warm up and take choke off. if its already warm, no choke hit the hot start occasionally and it fires right up.

Since you're eventually getting it started, your problem is different than mine was last week. Tried everything to start mine for at least a half hour. Put trickle charger on. Came back next morning and spent another half hour. Came back that afternoon after going over manual and writing out a check list. Oh, yeah. Opened the fuel valve this time. Only been opening fuel valves on Honda motorcycles/ATVs since '68. Probably haven't made that mistake in 40 years.

I have an '04 kick start and I have friends with an '05 kick and an '06 electric start.
I too have found that with a cold engine, put choke on, pump throttle twice and they will start right up.
When the engine is warm DO NOT pump the throttle before starting. This will flood the engine.

Ditto!
Absolutely never even touch the throtle when it is hot! And, for those who have the kick start version, be sure to pull the hot start button!
As for for forgetting the fuel valve...done that once or twice myself!
