Default Rebuild

Does anybody know how hard it is (from 1-10) to rebuild a 2000 400ex... i found one for sale locally and i have been workin on cars for a long time and am pretty handy. I would have friends who own quads help out but i was wondering how hard it is to do.

Also does anyone know a good place to order a rebuild kit from?

Thanks!!

where are you getting this kit from??? for a big bore kit to you have to take the motor to a machine shop like when you bore a motor for a truck or is it just a different kit?? and do you have a link for similar kits?? like the 416 kit?

Get the service manual, and look through it carefully to see what all is involved!

I also just bought a 200 400ex that needed a top end. It sounds like you're pretty handy so it should be pretty easy for you to rebuild it. I would first order a Clymers manual for your quad.

When I rebuilt my 400, I put it back to stock. I found a 2005 stock cylinder on ebay (very inexpensive) and put a new piston and rings in it. Also, I looked at the valves to make sure they were still in good shape and just lapped them back in. It all took a couple of weekends to finish the job. Make sure you buy a top end gasket kit and replace all the gaskets.

I learned alot about the 400ex in the process so now I have a little more knowledge about my quad when and if something goes wrong with it. It now runs strong and is ready for the track or trails.

Go for it! You'll have a great quad and learn alot in the process.
