Hi Guys!

We were just wondering if anyone can tell us what the best type of Engine Oil is to run in our 2005 Honda TRX450R? Should we run 10w40, 5w30? What would be the best?

Its not soo much the viscosity of the oil, its the type.... Check out the owners manual make sure you don't use just regular old car oil.... Now in this case you get what you pay for to some extent.... that old 99c oil isn't going to cut it.... I use Motorex Top Speed 4T Synthetic 15w50..... It meets and exceeds all the specs listed in your owners manual and is safe for wet clutches.... Check out this page.

I have an 06 450r and I use HP4 for the tranny side and i use HP4m(with moly) for the engine side. THis is top grade synthetic honda oil. but it is about 8 bucks a quart down here in Ga.

There is a lot more involved with than just picking an oil weight....and keep in mind that this is the only quad where the engine and trans oils are seperated....God bless Honda!

Engine Side: You won't go far wrong if you pick a motorcycle oil that is API SG. As for the JASO certification, you can run either MA or the slicker friction modified MB. Read the oil bottle before you buy!

Transmission Side: You can run a motorcycle engine oil that is API SG/JASO MA (no MB here!), or one of the transmission specific gear oils like Maxima MTL or Honda's own HP Trans Oil or Redline ShockProof.

Beyond that, this is an engine/transmission that can greatly benefit from a synthetic oil! There are three different types of synthetics, and of the three the esters are the best. Maxima, Redline, Motul, and Klotz all make ester synthetic oils that I would feel comfortable running. Weight: See your owner's manual for the temperature ranges where you live! With this engine, I would lean toward the heavier side!

Here in the southwest, our summers are hot and our winter are mild, so I run 15W50 in summer and 10W40 in winter. If I lived in the frozen north, I would run 10W40 in summer and maybe 10W30 or 5W30 in winter. (Do notice that your manual does not ever spec 5W30 for the transmission!)
