Default Becoming an ATV mechanic

I was wondering what does it take to become an ATV mechanic? This year I'm taking a free 5 month course of power mechanics (level 2) and next year another 5 months for my level three through my school. I was wondering after what do I have to do to continue. Is their a special place to go and learn the trade, or do you start off low and then work your way up to more important mechanic duties. How about to work for a dealer, such as Honda, how would you be a mechanic for them? (For lots of work, you would want to be a Polaris mechanic!!!) What sort of subjects do I have to take in high school, or is that of lesser importance?

Thank you in advance,

JasonJ

Most shops will take you in and train you. They start you out as oil and tire changers at low play. Then as the shop manger sees how you are doing they keep giving you harder and harder jobs and you move up through the ranks. At still low pay!!

Working for an ATV/Motorcycle shop is good way to get experience with small engine repair... but it is no career. The pay is only slightly better than minimum wage at best, with no benefits. If you do it as a start toward a career with an auto dealer, or as a heavy equipment mechanic, with good pay, medical benefits and retirement, OK. Or if you want to do it to work your way through school OK. Career?...not likely.

It is not that ATV/Mototcycle dealers are greedy and don't want to pay anything, it is just that most are barely making enough to keep their doors open. I have a friend who has a dealership. He stays in the shop after closing until midnight every night to keep up with the repairs. He is at the shop even when it is closed and on holidays. He hasn't had a vacation since he opened the shop 20 (or 30) years ago.....
