Hey all, just looking for some advise here, I know literally nothing about atv's so I am hoping y'all can help.
I am looking for a small, 2wd, used atv to do some lawn care with. I have a pretty small city type lot and am looking for something to use to pull some lawn and garden type attachments like aerators, dethatchers, lawn sweepers, etc.
I have considered a used riding mower, but most are not built well enough to do this type of work consistently, and the ones that are are way more than I want to spend. Plus I do not want to mow with it, so no sense buying a 3k lawnmower to not mow with.
Anyway, my thinking was a smaller 2wd atv might be the ticket. I could use it to pull the tools, plus small cart, etc. Plus putt around a little if I want. I am looking to spend as little as possible, so if a mid 90's XXX can be found for around $500 I am all for it.
What do you mean a lawn tractor can't do the work constantly? I used my lawn mower to pull my ATV and trailer which together weigh about 1.3k. It did this without even trying.
I have a Craftsman YTS3000 that I use for my business. I store it at home so I can use it whenever I want. It cost me roughly 1.2k last summer.
If you don't want to mow grass with it you can remove the mower deck and just put it aside until you decide to get rid of the mower.
I have to agree. A lawn tractor should be more than capable. I have an 8hp. briggs & stratton on a wheel horse thats over 20 years old and won't die. I use it for pulling a small cart and 250 lb. lawn roller with no troubles. But if your really wanting an atv for around the house I'd suggest a honda 250/ recon or somthing along those lines. You'll be a little hard pressed to find a GOOD machine for $500 though. I've seen a few 250's for upper hundreds but far and few between. And even though the price may seem right, stay away from the chinese off brand crap. They're more headache than they're worth.

I would suggest any 90s 2wd machine from the big guys......should be plenty. Ive got $700 in a 1994 Honda Foutrax 200cc ATV that loves yard work and play.
"Tractor?" My old one was a 1968 Gravely and I used it up to just a few years ago. It would pull anything. Anything! When it finally went to its last resting place I replaced with an Exmark ZTR (used high hours good re-condition). I wouldn't ask it to do heavy pulling duty, even with a 20hp Kohler. I read warnings about tow load on ZTR's back when I got it. Makes real quick work out of mowing for sure!
i agree that a lawn tractor is probably the best bet, and i would reccomend Cub Cadet. heck, if you wouldn't mind going used, i would recommend a cub from the 70's. i have a 129 that's still running like a champ, it does everything i need it to, pulls alot of weight (alot), and has been reliable. not to mention its built like a tank. that hydrostatic transmission? bulletproof. i take it everywhere on my property, in the woods and all. it goes up the hills, thru the mud and snow, everything. it needs an engine rebuild and all, but that's just something i need to do. not to mention, the decks are easy to take on and off, so when your not mowing with it you can remove the excess weight and make it lighter and more maneuverable.
