As I said it all depends on gearing.... A KTM 525 dual sport machine, meant to ride on the street will easily do 90..... My buddy has a dual sport Honda 600, and it will do about 90mph.
Any ATV engine could probably go 90 with the proper transmission and gearing.... if you hooked up some crazy 2-stage trans, with 10 gears....sure you could hit 90 but it would take a while to get there......
We had a guy come to my track that swore his modded 400ex would do 78mph....he paced it with his truck...etc...etc....
But when we strapped the GPS on his machine it was topping out at 67mph.....he was stunned and at first swore the GPS was wrong........ a few months later he showed up with a Trail-Tech speedo, and admitted the GPS was right, and that he generally tops out at about 65 in most conditions......
ATVs feel a lot faster than they really are.....Pacing one with a vehicle is totally inaccurate and cannot be trusted. Most automotive speedos are off by 3-5mph. A radar gun will work better, but they are still not accurate on an ATV or street bike profile within 5 MPH. Any good lawyer can get a street bike radar reading knocked down to a lesser charge because of this.
GPS is accurate, as long as calibration is set properly. There is still a chance for human error there too.
This debate has been around as long as ATVs have existed.... I remember arguing with a guy who swore his stock Banshee did 90mph......He took it to a local ATV drag and topped out at 72mph....still very fast.....but not 90.....
