Default Newbie w/ thanks and a question

Hi ya'll, I'm new to the forum and have been working on a chinese quad that I've gotten running from reading many of the threads on this forum. So I wanted to say thank you all for your posts and threads!

This is a chinese 150cc quad with the name Marshin on it, but that name doesn't get many results, and I can't seem to find a thread that covers my question.

The kick start feels like it's stripped, but it catches a lot of the time - enough to start it. I can kick it and turn over the engine, just sometimes it just rips right down. The mechanism looks alot like the CY6 engine with the belt, clutch, and kick start gears under the cover. When I opened it up I expected to see missing or worn teeth but didn't. So I'm wondering if it might be the spring loaded ratchet under the flywheel that's worn out.

Doesn't anybody have ideas or a fix for this?

Many Thanks!
Tad

No, the crank splines are good. It's happening on the inside.
Makes a fairly loud crack sound when it strips. But then I can try it again and it will catch and I can start it. I'ts random because sometime I can feel I'm pushing against a compression stroke and it doesn't strip.

I had that problem on my Jetmoto 150. Never did fix it but it seemed to be the result of a wear on all the pivot ends.. this wear caused both radial play and end play which was enough to not fully engage the kick starter splines at times.. on mine all the pieces were cast items with no bushings to wear out first.

I bought a $40 battery from AutoZone and forgot about it not working.. wish I could be more help.

Mywifesquad - That's what I was thinking too when I took the cover off, which feels like aluminum or pot metal. All the mechanism seemed to be looser than it should be. But it's really hard to tell for sure since I'm not experienced and can't see it with the cover in place.
I just didn't want to start replacing parts ***** nilly and get no where.
Sounds like you are a machinist from your name.

I think you would have to replace literally everything including the outer cover as one of the shafts pivots in it if i remember right. On my Yamoto 150 it has bushings in the cases where everything pivots and it was still working when it was parked 5 yrs ago even though its kick starter was used all the time. The Jetmoto 150 has the pivot points in the case and the case is worn also.

Yes Im a machinist. Been doing it for about 35 yrs now.
