Have you tried raising the idle and or turning the fuel screw out 1/2 a turn? Carb may need cleaning after sitting so long also..

It could be dragging/grabbing a little and stalling the engine.. Its a easy adjustment.. there is usually a bolt/nut under a small plate on the clutch cover.. loosen the nut a turn or 2.. screw in the bolt until it hits bottom and back it off 1/2 a turn and then tighten the nut..

thanks.
I think it may have been tampered with because the cover was off when I got it and the guy said it needed a clutch and gave me a new one.but we have it running and it shifts fine

Try adjusting it first and if that doesnt help it may need the new clutch.. Id think the adjustment should help.. have you changed the engine oil?
