Default 2009 Jetmoto 125cc Starting problems

Hello Everyone,

I bought a used 2009 jet moto 125CC ATV and it’s not running. Using a new battery and jumper cables hooked to my truck I got to turn over some of the time. The quad is turning over sometimes hard and sometimes fast and tries to fire far in between. I did get to start once for about 30 seconds feathering the throttle.
This is what I have done to diagnose the problem:

Pulled the spark plug – It’s getting spark (even without grounding it to the engine)
Cleaned the plug (it’s a new one)
Checked the Gap
There is compression in the spark plug hole when it is turned over.
The ATV turns over easy with the plug out (no pressure)

Check for gas
Pulled the line off the fuel filter, it is getting gas to the carb
Took off the air cleaner and sprayed starter fluid directly into the carb (Still nothing)

There seems to be a short somewhere being that it would turn over great and then really hard. My last attempt a swirl of smoke came up from the starter area and now it won’t crank even if I hook the battery right to the start (Time to order a new starter) but that still won’t cure my problem.

Do both the front and rear brakes have to be engaged to make it start? If this is true would it get spark even with them disengaged?

Is the spark I’m seeing enough spark?

Any ideas for when I get the new starter in???

I am by no means new to the ATV world, Just the Chinese one...

Default Update 4-7-14

Update 4-7-14

While waiting for the new starter to come in,

Drained the Gas tank (to put fresh in)

Cleaned the carburetor (It’s wasn’t really that bad but who knows can’t hurt)

Changed the oil in case it is full of gas..

There is not brake safety switch on the rear brake, The atv is cranking anyway so I think that rules out the front brake unless that’s why it was cranking easy then hard then easy ect…

Update 4-11-14

My new starter came in, installing it I noticed that the bolt connecting the battery to the solenoid was loose (That solved the hard cranking problem).

After everything I did, it finally fired up…

I had to adjust the idle screw but other than that is it running
