Try lowering the idle rpm of the engine. Once it is in gear does it want to creep on its own? How about when you shift from gear to gear is that better?

If nothing else maybe you can start it in gear so the tranny does not get spinning before y try to shift it.

drain the transmission oil and look for metal shavings on the drain plug also. sounds like you have an "automatic" judging by your CVT comment. i've had mine "scratch" into gear before. you may need to pull the left hand cover off of the belt area and check those clutch/driver facings. they may be worn and need replaced. (if you don't know how to do that, pull up youtube, there's plenty of videos that show how to do it. search words as CVT belt replacement, etc....)
but beyondupnorth has a point, lower the idle and see if that helps.
