Ok so i have a 2002 ds650 baja. I was riding it and noticed i didn't have the oil cap all the way down and oil was coming out. So i tightened it down and check it seemed fine no oil light on are any weird noise's. I pull it out today and turn it on and the oil light lights up right off the bat. call Honda(local can-am dealer) explain about what happened. They say it's low oil level go get the oil put it in. LIGHTS STILL ON! Call Honda again they say air bubbles..say go ride it work them out if it's not making noise are acting funny. So i go ride it..during the first 1min i notice smoke(gray smoke enough to notice it with out the seat off) coming out from the oil hose under the seat. it does it maybe 30sec then stops it. It stopped so quick that after it happened i figured it was air and oil burning off so i rode it to see if i could get the light to go off and after about 20mins the light go's off. I kill it go get gas in it get ready to ride it and turn it on and the LIGHTS back on. has any1 had this problem before? if so had did you fix it any help is appreciated.
the red light is oil presure and water temp combined, nothing to do with oil level. the oil presure sending unit is on the top right side of the transmission single wire, the temp sending unit is on the thermistate housing single wire. Fill oil and water . start machine red light shoud go out. You said you run it for 20 minutes so I would assume you have oil presure. Start machine up if red light don't go off, unplug one sensor at a time to see what senors it is that turns the light on
The Honda dealer told me low oil pressure make high oil temp. But I will try this and see if it works. but all the fluids are fine in it water and oil i checked them both. the light went out after i ran it for 20 or so mins. and then came back on after i started it again
i don't trust the "idiot" lights. thats why i went to mechanical gauges. took out the oil sensor & ran a line to the dash with a gauge. it tells you if you have preasure or not. same with the temp. if the sensor is going bad it may not work properly. when mine went out the light would never go off.
Yea its seems to run fine and stuff i hear no new sounds from it. It did blow smoke for about 30seconds and i could smell hot oil but then it quit. then the light went off and was off till i turned it back on and it stayed on...so i parked it and started collecting info on this problem. I'm thinking I'll just put it up for winter and then send it to Mr.Horsepower for some upgrades. With a big bore kit and cam's and stock crank being modified and some kind of porting that like a whole motor rebuild right?
I would start with replacing the oil pressure sensor. They are very prone to going out if they get a lot of water on them. Did you recently wash down the bike or run it through a lot of water? There is a factory rubber boot you can put over the sensor to keep moisture out but I don't recall the part number.
I ran it through water that day but the light never came on. I parked it and went a day later got it started it and it was on. Honda said check the oil. I check the oil and it was low so I put some in it...the light still stayed on. I took it out thinking it was air bubbles and drove it in the first 2mins i notice and smelled smoke i looked under the seat and gray smoke was coming out the oil hose under the seat. It only lasted about 30-45sec then quit. I did not hear anything strange from the motor so i figured it was air bubble and oil getting hot and coming out in smoke. So I drove it after 20min the light gos out and it seems fine. turn it off get gas and it's right back on. could that still be the sensor? Honda said maybe a blown head gasket. Was would that do? would it seem like it had loss of power or what?
Yes it sounds like it got water in it. Replace the sensor and pick up a spare while you are at it. Once they get water in them they are flaky. I had one do this a few years ago. Replaced it and problem fixed. I also ordered the rubber boot from Can-am that goes over it to keep water out.
So the gray smoke for 30sec I shouldn't be concerned about? If it was oil pressure then would it have lose of power or what? And if i got the OMW Big bore kit with the cam's and some kinda of porting that a whole motor rebuild more-less right? Sorry new to Motor and such!!!
Im just going to tell you what i know from personal experience on a ds650 motor seizing up.....my motor was stock never taken apart i had smoke comming out of the crankcase vent hose like you do now...it was fine and ran fine for a very long time...but pretty much that entire time my oil got dark/black almost immediately although it didnt use very much oil at ALL my top ring was gone on my piston....this was a common problem with a certain 04 ds650 model number a couple years back i had a post about it.....but if you have smoke and it started after your light was on....expect your motor to out of nowhere start running very hot and then seize up.....i even did a compression test when my top ring was gone and it was good.....never drive it with that light on until you figure it out or put a manual one on.
