I have a 2000 ds650 and I wanted to know if there is a way to test to see if the red light will come on, like a self test or something like that. I thought that it would at least come on when you turn the bike on, like a self test or something. Every since I got this bike I never seen the light.
It comes on when you turn the key on, goes out after oil pressure builds up. Will come on when the bike gets too hot or when the pressure drops too low.
The light should come on when the key is in the run position/engine off (no oil pressure)... after staring and it runs for a few seconds it builds oil pressure and the light should go off. If this is not happening you may have a bad oil pressure sensor or maybe just a bad connection under the dash. Check the connection and if thats not it then replace oil pressure sensor.
Rear portion of the motor in the center. Has a wire coming from the top of it. May or may not have a little black protective boot around it. When you get this sensor wet, it has a tendency to short out, making the red light stay on.
What jurslax said. While your back there go ahead and clean it with some good contact cleaner, hit it with some compressed air, then RTV around the boot and the base to keep anymore moisture out.
i keep 3-4 of those sensors in muh tool box >.<

ditch the sensor & go to a mechanical gauge and you WILL always know if there is a problem. idio lights are just that. just my 2 cents. i replaced 3 of the sensors on my 05 and was tired of waiting for them to get here so switched with no more troubles.
yeah i ran both for a while, put a T fitting on the case so i could have both light and gauge but rolled over and crushed the gauge = [
