i don't know on his. Mine is stock. Also, i am a bit of a novice when it comes to technical terms. What do you mean by gearing? Are you talking about the chain sprockets?

Since he has a rev box, I would say he is getting more rpm on the top end, if you put a pipe on and a rev box like his then you should beat him. From there it gets more and more expensive, just depends on how fast you really wanna go.

That don't sound right. You should be in the low 70's stock. has is your jetting?

Hey I got a MOTOWOZ suspension I took off my DS when I was running desert baja races, that is sitting around collecting dust! Best suspension out there!

So far, from what we can see, we are set up identical. Running side by side we both maxed out at 8500, even at the top end. He just took longer to get there. I'll check his jetting today. Could jetting really make that big of a difference? Could my big gun rev box be bad?
ps: I'l ask him about the suspension for you.

A out of tune carb can KILL performance! Jetting can definitely make a difference. CDI could be bad, but my money is on the tune.

I'm with Chris, my money is on the tune as well. Maybe your carb needs to be cleaned out and jetted correctly. With your set-up you should easily be in the 80mph range and above. Get that carb fixed ASAP!! and check the valves as well.

As an example I went out and test drove a fully built Mr. Horsepower 730 that a guy was selling here locally. It had the works, HPR4 cams, Lectron 48 carb, K&N, 730 BB, Vortex CDI, Ported head, etc etc. It had everthing done and it felt quite a bit slower than my mild stock bore. It had everything to do with the tune. If it was tuned right it should have been twice as quick and powerful as mine. So I can't stress enough that you probably have a bad tune. Give us your elevation and maybe we can steer you the right direction a little better on jetting and such.

I'm back with some info on my search for more speed. We have checked everything on both DS650's and everything seems to be the same. Someone told me recently that the Baja model has a better rev limit and timing curve the my stock model. My Big Gun isn't really working so now I am looking at a Vortex or a Dynatek and a slip on exhaust. I put a 17 tooth sprocket on the front. I know the settings for the jet are way off - it sputters and chokes when accelerating out of a turn over any bumps at all. I'm getting this looked at this week. Does anyone have any experience with switching on the fly with the adjustable CDI boxes? The BITD 1000 miler this summer will put a tax on the bike and I don't want to add to the stress if using the switch would be a problem.

I finally got the DS dyno testing done. I found my speed gremlin - it was a simple tune up. I picked up almost 8HP on the tune up alone! I haven't had the opportunity open it up but I will next week. I've added Fasst Flex handlebars, a +2 steering stem, desert tank, inner and outer support rings for the rear rims, tire balls and new plastics. We leave for the Vegas to Reno 1000 miler on Tuesday.
