Default Help buying a 2002 Sportsman 500 (what to look for and problems to fix)

Well, this is my first post on here and I'm not a SP owner yet. 4 of my friends all have 2009 Sportsman 500 4x4's. I just sold my old ATV and am looking at a 2002 500 4x4. One problem is the hour meter doesn't work (I'm waiting on another email as to if the speedometer and odometer still work). If for some reason they do, where would I need to begin to fix the hour meter. It's not that big of a deal, but If I ever wanted to sell it, it would help. The current owner told me that the hour meter reads 285 and mileage is at 1700 (if the odometer works also). That doesn't sound to bad for an '02 does it? I could get this for around $2000 possibly and owner says that everything works excellent and that it was used mainly for hunting and riding in the dunes a couple of times. His email said that it slides in and out of gear easily, reverse works great, and slides in and out of 4x4 effortlessly. He did say that it would also need new tires and the back plastic rack was cracked. Where would be a good place to replace that? As for the hour meter, would the whole assembly need to be replaced, or could there be something else. Also, what should I check / ask about when I go to look at this ATV?

Lets say I pull the trigger on it, what should I start maintenance wise?

Does this sound like a good deal?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

You have the opposite problem from me,only my hour meter works. If you odometer still works you don't really need a hour meter. Those Speedos cost $300 and I never really look at it much anyways so I would never change one.

Actually I like that year better than the new ones, they do not have the plastic roller cage issues or ECM computer brain box, larger gas tanks and a alloy oil tank not plastic.

I just change the fluids and grease the fitting regularly and it be pretty good so far 3,700 miles.

if you buy it, on any used atv, always check the valve lash. we burnt an arctic cat 500 up like that. we bought it, he said it was ready to ride, then one night i heard a pop, never has had any power since. or any compression (i think it has 40 PSI?) and use the best oil money can buy. :P 1700 miles isnt much for an atv. many atvs will go past 6,000 miles without trouble.
