Default Atc 125 motor in an ATV

Hello All,

I purchased an ATV that has a 125 atc motor stuffed into it (1985 model I believe) It needs a little work to get it up and running the way it should so I am trying to figure out what needs to be done. I cleaned the carb so that it would run properly and now it fires up and runs exactly as it should. So the motor purrs right along and it seems to idle just fine, and is responsive when I push the throttle.

Here is the problem, when I try to shift it into gear, it just dies. The second I put any pressure on the shift lever to upshift into first, it dies. Here is what I have done so far:

1. I have tried to adjust the clutch, just as described by loosening the nut and turning the adjustment screw counter clockwise, going 1/8 of a turn past when it starts to be difficult to turn, and then retightening the nut.

2. I have read that several of these models either upshift through the gears or downshift with nuetral at the top or the bottom. On the sidecase N is at the bottom, and it goes 1, 2, 3, 4 up the case. This one appears is it suppose to upshift, but when I try it just dies.

Anyone have suggestions? Oil change maybe help? Clutch shot? What do you all think?

Thanks!

could it be electrical? I do have a kill switch wired up, and it works just as it should when the motor is running and in neutral. However, it still dies when I try to put it into gear. maybe there is a wire not connected (since it was a motor swap) that needs to be and isn't?!
