New Owner of HONDA 250R 3 wheeler!! Info?!
My name is Chris and I am new here. I used to have a 200X when I was a teenager and sold it when I went to college. That was dumb!! I just bought a 250R 1984 on ebay for 455 dollars. Tank has a dent, seat is shot, 3rd gear does not work but all others work great. I have been looking at parts on ebay and numerous other sites. I noticed that the front sprocket is a 13 tooth sprocket. But I saw a 14?? What will that do? Does that give it more speed at the higher gears??
Also are any other parts from the 250R's from other years like 85, 86, etc. work on my 1984?? Or do I have to specifically buy 1984 parts?? I can not wait to start working on it. I am like a little kid at xmas!! Please post, I got no responses on my last post in the HONDA section. Thanks in advance.

No interchangeability from 84 to the 85-87's. They were liquid cooled. However, your motor parts are interchangeable with the 81-84 years. I just got rid of my air cooled R, a very nice trike to ride, but way more power than a person like me should have beneath them. Good score on the R though....a decent price. You'll probably have to split the cases to rectify the lack of 3rd gear.

I haven't boughten my manual yet but what does splitting the cases mean?? I have some experience working on them but nothing big like this one. I have replaced the sprockets and chain, fork seal, stuff like that. Thanks for the info though!!!!! Here is a trans. assembly on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3080&rd=1&rd=1
Would this be worth buying?? Or should I just replace third gear??
Also here is the auction I won:

New Owner of HONDA 250R 3 wheeler!! Info?!
Here is my email address. cplank00@verizon.net I am currently winning a manual on ebay for 8 dollars. I will look into the website.
Thanks for all the help. I am not sure if it slips out, b/c I don't even have the 3 wheeler here yet. I am going to go get it next saturday.
Should I try third when I test ride it or just go from 2nd to 4th?? I don't wanna do anymore damage. Also can I just replace 3rd gear or do I have to replace the whole assembly?? Also someone mentioned above or on another one of my posts, what does splitting the case mean?
Thanks again

Splitting the case is not for the faint of heart. You literally split it in 2 which means basically a total rebuild. Would be easier to buy another engine that is good. It might be something as simple as a spring but you won't know until you run it. If it just skips 3rd, leave be and run it till she blows. If it grabs and then pops out it can do a couple things 1) overrev the engine and do damage 2) missing of gear can slow her down and you could flip over bars or close to it or lose steering if in a turn(unable to powerslide) and hit something. I had an old Hodaka that had 2nd gear problems and it just turned out to be a spring under the side cover that was broken and kept the gear from engaging all the way. 10 minute fix.

To biggieFL:
THAT SUX!!! I thought I did good and got a great buy. The guy said that third gear is like neutral!! I am hoping from what you explained that it is just a spring!! I am going out to Columbus, Oh tomorrow morning to pick it up, so as soon as I ride it I will let you know!! I really don't wanna buy a new engine!!
I did wanna totally tear it down to the frame and spend the money on restoring it!! I look at this thing as a possible investment!! I see the avg. selling price is 1500-2000 restored on ebay! So 10-20 years from now maybe they will be worth 7k or so. I saw an Odyssey restored w/ a buy it now of 7k! That is crazy. I told my uncle who used to have a 250r that he raced at a local dirt track and couldn't believe that they are going for that much. Well thanks for the info!! So you don't consider splitting the case a do it yourselfer if they have a clymer book and a person that has worked on Honda engines?? Let me know. I wll post back as soon as I take it for a ride and let ya know!! Should I be soft on it or can I go for a real ride!!!!!!!!??????????
