well thanks for all the help, im going to tackle the project soon, it does seem a little weard that the long chain tensioners can be removed out the upper or lower end? i will try first it would indeed be nice not not have to remove the jug. wish me luck ha ha ha.

If you only replace the chain tensioner, not the guide as well, then you do not need to take anything off other then what I said. If you want to replace the guide as well, which I honestly don't think will need to be, i've done this job dozens of times, and have never seen a guide need replacing, then the only other thing you will need to take off is the valve cover, not the head itself. The guide drops in and the cover would have to be pulled to get it out. The tensioner, once the bolt that is holding it in is removed, can be fished out through the bottom of the case. Also, the chain can be removed and put back on by dropping it down into the bottom end, slipping it over the crank, and doing the opposite to put it back on, to get it up to the cam, you can drop a wire down from the cdi opening, and hook it onto the chain to fish it back up again.

I do recommend though, that you check the adjuster before you get too far ahead of yourself, since the locks could be hung on a burr and keeping the tensioner from adjusting. You may not need to replace anything... but, feel free to do whatever you want. Heck, split the cases if you like.

Good Luck.
