this is a dumb question im sure but what is the correct starting procedure for this machine? the wiring is a mess and various switches are messed up/broken. im trying to get the machine running before i dump anymore money into it.
keep in mind the starter does not work so im having to pull start it.
is there a park brake that has to be set or a hand/foot brake needs to be pulled in.
i do have to the service manual but have not found anything in there about the starting sequence

Should be in neutral, Key in the "ON" position, Ignition switch in the "RUN" position and possibly have the choke on if it cold at start up.
I think the machine is new enough that it has the start in gear feature. This allows you to start it in gear by applying the hand brake instead of putting the machine in neutral and following the above procedures.
I will add though that I personally find it much easier to pull start if the machine is in neutral. Course I am pull starting a 400 or a 500. I also like to gently pull the starter rope until just after the compression stroke. Then let the rope back in and pull as hard as I can. Seems to allow me to get some momentum going and it usually starts on the first pull.
