Dirt Wheels has again been very critical on the RZR in their latest shootout between the RZR and the Rhino Sport.

The comment that totally blew my hair back was on page 110 when they said:

"At top speed, the RZR hits it's rev limiter at 55mph while the Rhino will only reach 40mph. On long graded roads, this makes the Rhino painfully slow. To make both machines better we wish the Rhino had a ten-mile-an-hour higher top speed and the RZR had a five-mile-an-hour slower top speed."

They did mention that at top speed that they didn't think the RZR was that stable......But speed and acceleration are one of the MAJOR selling points on machines. For them to say that they would both be better if they were the same is insane.

That's like saying that the Scrambler 500 would be better if it were 15mph faster and the Renegade 800 would be better if was 10mph slower....Of course the Scrambler would look better if the advantage was taken away from the Renegade.

Sometimes I really don't follow Dirt Wheel's logic....I have been a faithfull subscriber for 6 years now too.

Yamaha will more than likely come out with a bigger engine to stay competitive. That's what competition brings......improvements.....or they go out of buisness.

As far as the Mags go......Dirt Wheels are getting a lot of strong competition their selves. Honestly I thing that QUAD Magazine is much better and has the best photos in the ATV magazine market.

My wife isn't very keen on the whole centerfold thing though. ha ha

Posted by: GregV

People spend unbelievable amounts of money on their Rhino's to make them go faster....I'll bet they all wish they had the power of the RZR.

My wife had ours up on two wheels one time and scarred the crap out of our Daughter.

Me, I've NEVER had it come up on me and I do a lot of aggressive driving. You just have to respect it in the turns.

I am very happy with the width, the shocks, the tires ( the rims need swapped out)......heck, I've even gotten used to the gas pedal.

I don't think I would be happy at all if I spent 10G's on a machine that couldn't climb a little sand hill (Silver Lake) !!

Posted by: GregV

Maybe Polaris should spend more advertising money with Dirt Wheels........then maybe they will catch a break.

You are right though about Polaris not being respected for a long time!!

I think they are headed in the right direction now with theur latest releases. Hopefully they will change a few minds !!

Posted by: GregV

Amen Badshee98!!!

Make everything the same and No One is special anymore. Then why bother..........

Posted by: GregV

Dude!!!... Sorry to hear about your accident! I own a 2005 Anniversary Edition of the V-Max. It's a sweet bike, and I know first hand the speeds that the V-Max is capable of.

To that I say, that is to me what the SxS market is all about. They give families, couples or even people who need special provisions to be able to enjoy offroading!!

I also Own a Yamaha Raptor 660 that I have poured a ton of money into......and it is seriously fast now!!! So, I am also a Yamaha supporter/fan as well.

The only reason that I started this thread is that I wish the shootout would have been a bit less bias to Yamaha. The the RZR wasn't on the market, the Rhino would have been a top contender to get my money.

Posted by: GregV

I'm no Spring Chicken anymore myself.....I just hit 40, which really isn't too bad. But, I have enjoyed sitting down in the RZR a lot more than I expected I would. I am more likely to jump in the RZR than on the Raptor.

My wife and I really enjoy dune riding......sand robs a lot of horsepower, so more is always better in the sand.

On hard pack.....not so much.

Also, I agree with the fact that Higher Horsepower normally equates to more frequent repairs or at least higher a matenance.

That is exactly why I was so interested in the RZR, I was hoping that I would be able to buy this machine and be happy with the performace without having to screw with it.

Posted by: GregV

No......no performance mods as of yet. Other than putting winter floor mats in to help keep my throttle foot from sliding....helps with the Torque bucking that sometimes occurs in rough terrain at slow speeds.

I am very happy with it's performance. I would like to change the rims....other than that....I'm good to go.

Get a few miles on her and let us know what you think.

Posted by: tmm2good

I read that review because I really like the looks of the RZR, I can't believe Dirt Wheels almost had to say a POLARIS was better than a Yamaha. They were really stretching to find better things in the Rhino.

"A fast bike has the option of going slow, but a slow bike has no other option. "

That is comedy gold right there...

Sometimes you've got to wonder if these guys just 'say' things like this to jump start more discussions and get their name bandied about; as they sure aren't proofreading this stuff if they don't (I intentionally left out the 'idiot' factor; as you can't believe that somebody would say something like this on purpose).

GregV):
"...They did mention that at top speed that they didn't think the RZR was that stable..."

I have intentionally slowed our Rzr down many times since '03 after a few pucker moments involving overconfidence (bone stock machine save the CDI).
Our out of the crate Rzr causes me to slow down at times simply for the fact that at speeds where the Rhino seemed uncomfortable?...the Rzr does not (which "I" believe ought to scare me...)

"...For them to say that they would both be better if they were the same is insane..."

Agreed.

(GregV):
"...Yamaha will more than likely come out with a bigger engine to stay competitive. That's what competition brings......improvements.....or they go out of buisness..."

They'll do so and I believe Polaris is (at least partly) banking on the fact that nobody has followed them into the much lower center of gravity 50" market to date. The fact is...they got beat up at the largest maintained system out there by the holier-than-thou motorcyclists and every one of the red-headed-step-child atv clubs fighting over 60" trail allowancess...so why in the heck would they build a 'me too' banned (in certain places) rig like everybody else?
They don't have a stand-up community out here to suport reasonable trail widths or even common sense on any issue involving the sport itself...so they're stuck building whatever they may throw against the wall and sticks in the UTV market...which this machine obviously did for good reason.

Posted by: blackballed

I've never had it come up on my either (as you say, just simply respect a 50" rig in the turns) and have faith in Polaris also with this new engineering.

Not many Rhino owners out there chiming in here....hey guys, I'm just about as sick as you are that we spent all that money in the aftermarket since '03 also!

Posted by: blackballed

Thanks for breaking the dumbfounded silence on that one...

Posted by: blackballed

(chuckle) ..you're right; it's all in jest.if we didn't laugh about it....)

I'm not sure that the Rzr speedo actually compensates for different diameter tire sizes...yet I may be mistaken on this.

Posted by: blackballed

Hey, you can't beat that for confirmation and thanks for taking the time to set me striaght on this.

A lot of us out there have owned both since day one and are neither Polaris or Yamaha fans..just plain 'ol folk out here making the best choice for our money as technology improves and some models don't over time.

As far as the "holding your buddy's hand" comment...I suppose that you have to be secure in....(you know the rest) before you jump into any side-by-side if even your buddy's motive's are in question at any given time!

As a sidenote; there were very few in this so-called 'community' willing to speak out against the vulgarity contained in the internet spoof many came across on a Glamis-related site months ago slamming both Polaris' good name and folks in general. I quit posting on said site for the simple fact that few in the off-road community seem to stand up for anything 'conservative-related' anymore for fear of not being 'liked' on something as inconsequential as a website forum. IMO, this is why proud legacies involving standards of behavior or respect for the environment are not and probably never will be built or passed down in this generation tomorrow...as anything goes 'today' and you darn well not question it right on up to and including just how off-road leadership represents us all behind closed doors to others.
A lot of good people have been chased away from this sport over the years...and I will always feel personally that this has been the most shameful legacy that we will ever leave...behind a side-by-side community that never included/embraced the young, old or disabled in every single public event that they ever held; giving the less fortnate a chance to finally experience the outdoors using this new technology (sorry to rant...).

Congrats, Captn!
I've been off in Chicagoland this past week to comfort a friend and am glad to see that your long wait is over.

Congrats, Gary and thanks for the review!

I think the rzr handles great at top speed. 72 mph and one hand comfortably. On atv 72 gets a little fast.

Posted by: travelor

I don't think it is fast at all compared to the outlander . This is speedometer speed so is probably less. Remove spacer and reprogram ecu and hit 7000 rpm, new rev limitor and you will be over 70 on speedometer. Wanting a turbo and higher gearing.

Posted by: travelor

When I said 72, I said by speedometer. I know it is off. I also have ecu box reprogrammed to run 7000 rpm and at rev limitor on pavement It is past 70 on guage. Probably middle 60's. Did you have your ecu reprogrammed and spacer taken out?

Posted by: travelor

The spacer is in the clutch. Remove it and gain up to 8 mph. You can send your ecu in to get reprogrammed. It raises timing and lessens fuel on top as well as raising rev limitor to 7000 rpm. Don't know if I am allowed to say where I sent it. It's the place that sell superchargers.

Posted by: TLC

I gave up on Dirtwheels years ago when they had 350 Rancher vs a 350 Wolverine. They admitted the Wolverine was quicker, fast, lighter, had better brakes and had more suspension travel but those little details were not enough to out do the Rancher!

They did mention that at top speed that they didn't think the RZR was that stable

Leave that one up to the buyer, most people do not ride around from point A to Point B at WOT 100%.

A fast bike has the option of going slow, but a slow bike has no other option.

Posted by: Scrambler00

well theres a die hard dirt wheels fan, the RZR is supposed to by a fun and fast side by side while the rhino is more of a work horse. and personally alot of people who own and take care of their polaris's dont have any reliability problems. and ya guys i think quad mag is getting to be better, the dirtwheels is kinda plain and old now lol

Posted by: Nightclerk

travelor you say 72 mph! Has this been tried & proven if so just exactly how is it done, sure would like to try that out. I got 59.20 mph on mine at a dragstrip with 27" 589's & I weigh 300 lbs. I was hitting the rev limitor at the 1,100 to 1,200 ft mark & it slowed a little so I figure it was a bit over 60 mph top speed.

Posted by: Nightclerk

BB that 59.20 was the dragstrip measurement they let us run the track & that was the speed printed out on the ET time slip. We ran e few passes & the speedo was showing nearly the same speed.

Posted by: Nightclerk

Ya I was happily surprised when I seen the time slip but I would like to find out how to get the performance that travelor is talking about.

Posted by: Nightclerk

No I only had it 3 days at the time haven't done a thing to it. I have no idea what spacer you are talking about & what do you have to do to reprogram the ecu?

Posted by: beermanjoe

Got mine yesterday and I think it`s great.I`m 6' 1" and 270 lbs and my dad is 5' 10" 240 lbs and we both fit in it very well.Plenty of room,Iwas actually very surprised on how much room there was.The power is awesome!!!!!!

there might not be many rhino owners chiming in here because this is a polaris ranger and razr thread

yamaha will probly come out with a 700 rhino, but they more than likely won't go any bigger because they just lost a multimillion-dollar case on the rhino. also they were probly critical on the rzr because polaris has had a lot of reliability issues. DIRTWHEELS IS NUMBER 1 if you don't like them then *good for* you.

Hey BB

Did you know this was a Ranger-RZR thread?

Oh yea and that no Rhino owner would read anything in this area, (it would make them crazy you know)

All in Jest my friends, all in jest.....

72 mph....Holy Mother of...........

What in that thing?

Posted by: CaptnKidd

Amen to that Gamalot

I'm not built for speed any more, so I go for comfort and fun.

Plus I dont care who likes what, I like what I like.

And on this day of all days;

I say to all brother V. Vets, "Welcome home"

To All other Vets, I say "Thank you"

To All MIA'a I say "I will never forget"

Most of all to the Families, Friends & Survivors of 9/11, I say "My heart goes out to you all and NONE OF US SHOULD EVER FORGET"

And to all the rest I say "Do not worry about the little things in life, just be glad you have your freedom to enjoy it"

Now everyone, lets get out there and tear up some dirt....

Posted by: CaptnKidd

Well GregV might not be a spring chicken anymore, but you sure arn't an old roster yet.

So are you happy with the performace or have you started screwing with it.

I'm just waiting for that phone call......

When I had my 6-wheeler, my wife and I really enjoyed going out, but she was always scared of sliding out of the seat, even with the seat belt. Seems I like to ride on side hills or when following atv, the trail was always so that I had to keep one wheel in the rut and the other on the bank, of course it was easier for me if she had the low side...

looking forward to this machine...

Posted by: CaptnKidd

Mine came in yesterday. Now it will be my turn to say what I truely think about it.
I'm not into speed, but I do like having the power when I need it.

Well maybe sometimes the speed to.....

Posted by: CaptnKidd

Just brought her home. The sad thing is I drove it 100 ft put it on the trailier and I just finished tarpn' it up. I will not get a chance to ride for a week or two now.

Oh well

Posted by: CaptnKidd

Well everyone, we have finally arrived in Eugene OR. Now I just have to get out there, maybe run over to florance and hit the dunes. Want to take it to Coos Bay to run.

I did stop in and see the folks at Holtz Racing Products. What a great bunch of guys, spent a lot of time with me showing me not only what they make but what they have used as far as other products that they do not make.

I did buy a few things from them, like the grill, the bar to close the gap behind the seats that lets dust in and to the airfilter and I also picked up a UNI filter and kit.

I will be ordering more from these guys thats for sure.

Now I just have to get it off the darn trailer.

I have an 07 rhino 660 and I love it. I have gone up hills that most atvers wouldnt go up and had no problems. The only regret is the power but that is the trade off when you get a utv, its not an atv. I have my king for when I want to go fast. The rhino is also excellant in the mud and muck goes through just about anything. It would be nice to see an 800cc engine in it but that wont happen any time soon. The razr in my opinion is kinda ugly and I dont know about you guys but I dont want the feeling that I am holding my buddys hand while driving around in that little cab. If your a polaris fan than you probably love it for that reason and that is understandable. The rhino is best all around I believe.

Posted by: kickervr91

well technically I owned a 07 yamaha v-max 1200. Hit an 18 wheeler with it and ended up losing my leg and totaling the bike. so i bought the rhino to go 4 wheelin in, cause my vinson at the time was a standard. Now i have purchased a king 700 auto to ride as well.

Posted by: Gamalot

DOES ANY OF THIS EVEN MATTER????

I've been around fast machines since before I went to Viet Nam.

One thing for sure is the one that makes it to the line fastest is also the first one to the shop for expensive repairs!

I guess I have to wonder where we came up with RACE out of RAZOR?

I could care less who gets there first because it is always a combination of brute force linked to a death wish.

I am more concerned with who reaches the finish line most often and with the biggest grin.

Please don't take this wrong folks but here in NY every idiot who gets dead sets us back into the dark ages for places to ride. Right now, NY demands we all have them registered and insured but there is no such thing as an approved STATE OWNED place to ride them.

You will never get a Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Artic Cat or any other lover to agree that Polaris is better. Why even bother? Just pass them by and have a big grin at the finish line!

I got mine on friday and finally put 20 miles on her today!

WOW is the best description I can offer at the moment.

On the straights I blew off a Grizzly 650 with plenty to spare. On the trails he has it over me but not by much and may be just because I am not a speed demon.

Me the wife and our Brittany puppy had a ball tooling around and enjoying a great day.

I do scrape bottom in the rocky spots but not too bad and a good inspection shows the OEM skid plate did its job.

Throttle is a bit finicky at first and takes some getting used to.

It went everywhere I pointed it and did it all with great ease and my shoulder is perfectly fine now after a hard ride and no handle bars!

A little tweeking and some serious thought about what accessories will do the most good is all that is in order now.

This is deffinately the best $11K I have ever spent on a toy!
