When I was researching mine a actually talked to a guy at Cannondale. I had read somewhere about the ECU's burning up and asked him about it. He said it was a potentioal problem on the early ones and they had put a diode somewhere in the system to prevent the problem. I guess the diode goes in the wiring harness.

Now you've got me wondering.. My speed is #24

Anyone know what I could look for to see if mine has the update?

I think there is some validity to your statement, Ryanstones. I had to wait about a month for my Speed (#72) because my dealer told me that Cannondale found a problem with the ignition and was testing the replacement for it before they shipped the quad. I finally got it in mid-December. I'm not sure how many earlier Speeds were affected.

My dealer's service manager called today to ask me to bring in the cannibal(prod. #20) for a new wiring harness. Said the Cannondale rep was there and the update was urgent due to the possibility of frying the ECU. (500series) Has anyone else been contacted? Might want to check it out.

While I had him on the line I asked if he was ready to check the valve clearances and could he give me a price. When he came back on the line said it would be about 2 hours labor. I tried to get him to commit to that price, since he was unaware that the engine must be dropped. When we hung up he still didn't believe me. I think I might be just as well to do it myself!

As it turns out, my dealer had it all wrong. The harness update applies only to cannibals with the 1000ECU and Vin # under 700something, and a very few of the first speeds.

Don't quote me Jay, but i think it was only the first 10 speeds subject to the update, as well as the cold start remap. Maybe someone from Connecticut or Pennsylvania can help with this question.

My dealer had speed #56 and man was it sweet. I was tempted to see what the trade difference was, but backed off with respect to domestic tranquility. BR>

The diode installation is a fact. So is a ground strap that is needed.

It seems that the only time you will have the problem is when you turn the machine off using the key instead of the kill (unless you have the update). This applies to the GP1000 systems.

Jay,

Call Cannondale. They will run your VIN and guide you through a check for the updates.
