Hey guys,
we have three fourwheelers, 2 sportsman's and a xplorer (2 stroke 250 4x4). I have an eccentric grandfather, and I was talking to him, and accidentally sold him on the idea of a UTV.
Now, I've absolutely always wanted one. But, my grandfather has a habit of buying more than he needs. Now, if it were anything else, I'd just let him go, but four wheelers are kind of my passion, and I don't want to see a nice UTV go to a less-than loving home.
He does a lot of yard work and projects around his property. Right now, his best friend is his Craftsman tractor with a cart trailer. It's always full of rocks, tools, cement, lumber, and whatever else he's doing. I think a UTV would be perfect. We'd let him use our xplorer, but he's old and stepping over the quad is hard, as is the thumb throttle and handlebars.
I'd really like to stick with polaris here. Their new Razr looks cool to me, but I don't want my Pops cruising around in an 800. I'd be jealous, and he'd kill himself. Plus, it seems more sport oriented, and he's all work.
Our dealer told us he could get a good deal on a 6x6, as they don't sell. But I don't think that has IRS (nice for an old guy) and I don't know how easy the 4 rear tires would be on his grass.
My biggest question is how do I get the thing home? I have a full size pickup, but I usually use my covered snowmobile trailer for all our toys. I'm thinking this is way too big for that. I'm sure the dealer would let us borrow something, but I'd rather have something I can use as often as I need it.
So my biggest real question -- how much will it cost for a trailer that can move this?
Sorry if this is vague, just looking for some general input. Not to be closed minded, but I'm pretty pro-polaris, unless there's a real good argument for another brand, that's what I'm going with.
Thanks
Tyler

Thanks for the input, guys.
I was looking at a brochure from my dealer. It says that a ranger (regular one, not Rzr) fits in "most full size pickups". The picture they show is the rear end of a dodge ram with a ranger squeezed in (with both tires touching the bed rails). We have a ram. It's definetly a long bed in the photo (as the rear tires aren't even resting on the tailgate) and I have a shortbed. But I think it would just barely go in with the rear tires at the very back of the open tailgate. That's going from the photo in Polaris regular ranger brochure.

pwillie, I'm not ignoring you. I'm just pretty brand loyal and polaris makes sense to me for so many reasons. I know the ins and outs of our quads, and having the same (similar?) engine and tranny and awd system will be nice. Plus I can go to my regular dealer who I've bought all my toys from.
I'll certainly stop by the yamaha dealer, I know it's stupid not to check things out. Sorry if I sound ignorant, I know as well as anyone else how obnoxious brand loyal people can be, but I'll be the first to admit it.

The arctic cat dealer here is a little bit of a drive -- I pass the polaris dealer every time i head to the lake, so it's never out of the way for parts or picking up quads.
Any idea if a ranger will fit (ie can be transported, I don't expect it to "fit") in a shortbed pickup? I checked the width, I'm fine there, but length is really an issue.
Otherwise, thanks for the comments guys.
Tyler.

I would buy American if it held its value as well as the Jap bikes(RUV'S). Dealerships are easy to get (Polaris) but another story about Yamaha and Suzuki....Parts ande service is another story also.Artic Cat has made a big dent into sales also! The Prowler is seen in many places, fiels, woods, etc. I have owned Suzuki, Kawasaki,Honda, and Yamaha. I liked the Honda Rincon least.
I understand. I'll admit I've never owned anything other than a Polaris. A lot of people would give me a hard time about that, saying how could I know if I haven't tried anything else, but my idea is that I haven't had a single bad experience with all the Polaris's I've had. If I do, I'd consider another brand. I just see so many benefits of going with another polaris -- I know the drivetrain and engine systems, have any special tools I need already, experience working on them, (some) parts are interchangeable, and a good relationship with my accessible local dealer.
I try not to be closed minded, but when you've had nothing but good experience, switching seems like a possibly regrettable step. If I stick with polaris, and something goes wrong, I can know it wasn't at all bad judgement on my part.

Just for an update, I ended up with a Ranger XP700. He got the multimount winch (goes in a 2" receiver, front and rear) and a full cab. The cab is incredible, it makes the machine literally 10 times more useful. I know they're expensive, but being able to use the machine in any weather, temperature, or trail condition (ie heavy dust) makes it way more useful.
As for transporting, I tried it in the back of my short bed Dodge, and it was like a joke. The rear tires were just barely on the tailgate. It looked like one pickup giving another a piggyback (the ranger really is huge). I think a long bed would be no problem, however.
Anyway, I ended up going with this trailer. It fits 2 fourwheelers no problem, the ranger alone just fine, or the ranger and my 04 sportsman if I tie the tailgate up (just a few degrees away from closing enough to latch. Be warned, however that the new-style sportsman is too long to load sideways (front ramp) and latch the gate (by about a half inch). Letting just a bit of air out of the front tires would fix this, however.

Well I build rangers for a living so let me help you out here, a good utv for him would be a ranger 500. It has the same frame and suspension as the 700, but only does 41mph, instead of 50, like the 700. It also has what is called turf mode, which is essentially one wheel drive, that is designed not to tear up the yard. I build 6x6 and the first axle on the back is irs, and the rear is a solid axle. The RZR is mainly sport as it doesnt have a dump box. All you need to transport it would be like a 2 place snowmobile trailer, which can usually be found pretty cheap in the classifieds. I would try to find one at least 10 foot long

That might be alot of weight for the tailgate to handle???

I would rent a trailer from UHaul to move it whenever I needed to. Why tie up a pile of cash on something you have to mow around 90% of the time?. Another option is www.atvracks.com UTV hauler. You could use that since you already have a full sized truck.
And yes, the Polaris Ranger would be fine for you and him, but I think the John Deere Gator might be best for him because it has a dump cargo bed; and the Ranger doesn't. I checked the Ranger site, it doesn't say the bed tilts.
Whatever you buy, make sure he loves it, or he won't use it.

I bought a 2007 Cub Cadet and had the same problem. I found a real nice trailer for a low cost.
