Is there a wrench out there that can explain the "700" and "660" engine differences? In fact the 700 is 686 cc, and the 660 IS 660 cc. The 660 is 5-valve, versus 4 valves for the 700. Yep, the 700 has EFI, a big plus. What else sets these two Yamaha engines apart? As prowrench mentioned, a 2 mm larger bore is trivial. So, why does Yamaha make two powerplants so close in specs?

You have touched a couple of nerves! First off, Americans are lawsuit happy. The nature of operating these machines carries a risk factor, as virtually everthing in life does. If one does something dumb, rides beyond the design capability of the machine, there are consequences to pay. Live with it, and stop going after the manufacturer!
Secondly, the danged special-interest groups need to get a life! The motocyclists resisted ATV's, and the skiers fought against snowboarders. However, I am 65 (gotcha beat here!) and for health reasons need to sit in a seat. Also, the wife is not comfortable operating an ATV, but wishes to come along. So, a side-by-side is the only answer. Live, and let live!
Gonna wait for Sept 2007. If no Honda machine by them, hopefully Yamaha will EFI the Rhino.

Its good to see more and more of these sporty side x sides coming out. Artic has theres now with a 700 efi also, and the new kawi with there 750, and yamaha now with there 700 in the rhino. All of the specs are fairly close to each other. It will be interesting to see how all of these do in the real world. I really like the looks of the kawi, I know it looks alot like the rhino, but it has its diferences also. I wouls really like to drive each of three to see which I would really favor. I hope to see the other manufactures get into the sporty sxs also. Time will tell...

It's good to see the manufacturer watching the aftermarket and incorporating things into the new models. The FI 686 will be nice. Decisions ---- Decisions !!!!!!!

I would say they are not in a hurry to throw the 700 EFI engine in it since there isn't any real competition for it. But I would say it will be here in '08 or '09 regardless.

I hope so, I would love to see a rhino with a 700 cc fi motor with power steering. So im going to wait, as i hear alot of rumors on the internet about kawasaki and honda might be coming out with new ruv`s and polaris might have a new ruv more aimed at the sport side of the market. So im just going to sit back and listen to all the rumors floating and hope they come true. Because come around january i should be back in the market for another ride..

Man, that is very interesting. I have never heard of this at all. As a matter of fact, my local dealer says the ORV's will only increase because two can ride them, they are slower than most ATV's and considered safer in the general publics eyes. Where did you find this information so I can read it?

The day before Thanksgiving, I stopped in and talked to a friend who works at the Yamaha dealer. He told me in 2008 the rhino will have the 700efi motor in some of the special models like the touring editions etc. But, the basic rhino will be the 660.

This is a lawsuit filled against Yamaha, because of Rhino rollover. It is crazy how this
country is lawsuit happy. Did anybody even take any responsibility for their own action

I look at all of these lawsuits on Rhino rollovers then look at my WR450 bike and wonder why they don't have the same problems with dirt bikes? Just about anyone that has owned one has been hurt.
Local lawyers love to take their cases to St. Louis because to city people hate the corporations and they will win. Then they bitch about high doctor and insurance costs. Half of what you pay is for insurance. They just pass the cost to us. In cape Girardeau County you had better have a strong suit to win. We hate seeing people get rich because of their own stupidity.
The problem is companies will settle when they should have fought all claims. That is what medical liability insurance companies have started doing now. Most lawyers will not take the case if they have to go to court.

I heard it from a dealer owner who got it from a dealer meeting with Yamaha. I cannot reveal the name for obvious reasons, but I believe him because he is part of my family.

Sorry to hit a nerve, but facts are facts. Yamaha built the rhino with a small but signifiacant flaw in the front passenger area. There ia not enough restraint for legs( or better put, something to keep the feet in when tipping). Tweo of my boys ridding a Rhino tipped it over on one side. My son,passenger, had his leg crushed because his leg got caught under the weight of the machine. It completely shattered the fibula nd broke the tibia in two places. He has metal plates holding his leg together and screws holding the plates to the bone that was left. Now, I agrre about frivilous law suits, but this isn't frivilous. This is a hazard and yamaha has recognized it in and is fixing it in newer models. NO, we are not suinig anyone, so don't shoot the messnger. But I can tell you fisrt hand about the pain and suffering this has caused my son and the rest of the family that cares about him. He was laid up 9 months trying to heal. He just got back to work as heavy equip operator, but his leg gives him grief every single day.

That given, I am still buying a Rhino, I fully support Yamaha and I think its the best damn product out there for people like you and me for taking our wives on rides. I wish everyonew had one. Its here. The raptor/grizz powered 2008 rhino. I will be buying this one in Dec, the 12k black flame one. I have not seen the weight of the new ones yet. They only claim a better power to weight ratio. My Raptor beats every 660 raptor I have run across. It's also a very torque plus motor. This should give the RZR some trouble. I sat in an RZR and firmed my decision to stay with Yamaha. The only other one that even looks like a competitor is Kawasakis' new one out in Jan 08.
For the nay sayers about the safety issue on roll overs, check the new doors on the 08 and yamahas free offer to upgrade EVERY RHINO MADE with retro fit doors.
The other SXS makers should follow suit. I'll bet in 09 they will all have safety features for the roll over potential.

yeah its a good idea to wait and see who comes out with what next , i heard rumors about the honda , it will be interesting to see what it is and how well it performs. But dont base your decision on just what people state on the internet, go out and expereince each product for your self. I have driven the ranger and it seems like a nice vehicle other then the way you sit in it, your sitting verticaly and it feels like your driving a school bus because of the the steering wheel and the way its positioned . I own a rhino , and i am amazed on how well it handles and what it will climb, the rhino has my vote !

Yamaha has their 2008s listed for everything in the outdoor section except for the rhino, and honda has a side-by-side now thats called the big red. it's the ugliest side-by-side that i've ever seen. you can see it on the honda website.(it won't be released until next summer.
