Just for curiousities sake, I took the known RWHP of my 727 and did a power to weight comparison. A Rhino with my 727 would have almost exactly the same power to weight as a stock 400EX. So you're gonna need the nitrous to beat most piped Raptors.

Black Rhino,do you have the spedo? does it work with the 2004 cdi? i heard the spedo doesnt work and the gear indicator light flashes. thanks Rich

You could use a CDI from a 2004 Grizz. Installs like the stock unit. (DW June issue)

Anyone out there have this beast? If so, do you ever drive in sand? Does it feel underpowered with two people? If you drive it in Glamis will it make it up Olds? how much do you think I could expect to find one of these things for slightly used? Thanks guys

You can put a CDI on it and it will run in the low 50s.

why dont they just make the rhino faster to begin with. i mean they could just use some more of the grizzly componets and boom a fast rhino. becuase most of the people who want them are just going to make then faster anyways and if you dont need the speed you can just not go as fast.

I was riding around a dune in oregon with a guy who had one, it went pretty good it made it up some pretty steep sand hills, speed wasnt bad, still made it up the same hills with a passenger, it had a hmf exhaust on it also, thats all i know about it or seen of it, hope that helps some

I've got one. I took it to Ogilby (right next to Glamis) when it was still in stock trim. Dropped tire pressure to 5 pounds all around. I was blown away (and pleased) at how well it did in the dunes. Went everwhere I pointed it. If you know Ogilby/Gordon's the popular hill climb is called Test. I was able to do Test, but at the easiest spot. BTW, I also had my Raptor out there, and ended up driving the Rhino much more than the Raptor, it was that much fun.
Since then I've added the Grizzly CDI (it's a 2004 Grizzly control module from the Dealer, around $300), an HMF pipe, and 165 main jets. What a difference! It'll do close to 50 (they do over 50 if you change the clutch componenets out to a Grizzly clutch stuff). And I have to be careful with the gas on turns, as it now will break the tires loose if you're not careful with the pedal. It's about the most fun toy I've ever owned/ridden. I'm just sorry I got my performance mods done too late, past the desert season. Now I've got to wait for the desert to cool down before I get back out there.
I need to order 27" tires (stock are 25) and try Test again. I'm pretty sure with the performance mods I'll do anything Test has to offer. Also want to take it to Glamis and go for Oldsmobile, but from what I hear, Test is more aggresive that Olds, so I guess that's the test. Now if I can find some paddles or DesertTracks, the damn thing will be totally unstoppable. It's got more than enough power for the dunes. With paddles for traction, OMG!

Sorry it took a while to get back to you. The Griz CDI does not work with the Digital Dash. The reverse light wacks out (even with standard panel lights) and the speedo/odometer doesn't work. There's a new CDI coming out that eliminates the speed limiter, and works with the Dash. Just can't remember who's got it, so many vendors...

Well, there you go. A good excuse to spend some $$ on nitrous!

In technical terms: LIABILITY. Yamaha won't assume that kind of risk. Now why they let a Grizzly go in the 60's and a Rhino is restricted to 40 I don't know. I guess they figured the Rhino would be a slightly different market. Plus they roll fairly easily. The Rhino is still the fastest side-by-side out there, even in stock trim. Plus I'm sure they figured that someone would come along and make parts to satify those of us with a need for speed.
