Truck and trailer in my sig and pics. Barely know it's back there until I try to pass a gas pump. Next truck will be a diesel.

It sounds like you either have too little tongue weight or your trailer is too big for your Tahoe. I'd play around with the weight distribution in the trailer - try it out with more weight loaded forward. You can reach a point where you need a certain amount of tongue weight (normally 10% to 15% of total trailer) to keep the rear end from fishtailing but you can find that this amount of tongue weight is too much for the tow vehicle. The WD hitch should help but it needs to be set up right - pretty important that the trailer and tow vehicle remain level. The Tahoe has a fairly short wheelbase so any minor trailer sway will be amplified as compared to towing with a longer WB vehicle. Final thing to check is your weight - I can see a 22' loaded trailer passing 8,900 pounds. Keep in mind tha the 8,900 number is a max load number and includes all passengers in the Tahoe, all your gear and fuel. Rule of thumb for safety is to only tow to 80% of your rated tow weight.

I tow a 30' bumper hitch 9K lb Raptor toyhauler and a 33' 11K lb boat.
Gas mileage isn't very good, 6-7 towing and 11-12 around town empty.
If my truck wasn't paid off and 100% reliable, I'd look hard at a Dodge Cummins. My Dad just installed a Predator programmer in his 05 3500 Dodge dually 4x4 and gets 11.5 mpg towing my boat, he used to get 9 mpg before the programmer.

The computer programers that increase diesel truck power fool the computer into thinking it is giving less fuel to the engine than it really is, so the end result is the computer giving more fuel to the engine, and it makes more power. The thing is though, the programmer also fools the on board computer that calculates fuel mileage into thinking you are burning less fuel than you really are. Most programmers will show a 2 - 3 mpg gain in fuel mileage as calculated by the on board computer, even when there has been no improvement at all. If he was calculating fuel mileage by hand, instead of going by what the computer says, then he has gained fuel mileage. How much does your boat and trailer weigh? My fiver weighs 17,000 fully loaded. That makes a stock Dodge getting 9 mpg, and a stock GMC getting 9 mpg. Looks pretty equal to me. I've actually owned two prior Dodge Cummins, and they're fine, but the rest of the truck is sure better with GM.
Wow, that's good info. We were using the factory fuel mileage computer, never checked it against paper and pencil. Even if it didn't get better mileage with the programmer, it sure hauled better with 150 extra ft/lbs TQ.
My boat trailer is a 13K lb triple axle aluminum trailer and the boat is roughly 11K lb with fuel, water, ice, gear, and beer. There is a picture of it on My Page here, it makes my F250 look like a little toy.

I usally keep it at 55 mph with the OD off ... may take me a little longer, but i get another 72 miles out of a tank of gas.

Proud to say i prolly have the wimpest vehicle in the post.
I have a 1993 subaru legacy towing a Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer which pulls my rancher and stuff around 1000 pounds. been towing for 35K, car is at 104k, runs flawless and gets 17-19 towing at 72mph through the hills of pa, and can get close to 25 drafting a semi
heaviest was either a 6x14 trailer towing a forman and a rancher and 4 5 gallon gas jugs, or 35 pallets on my HF trailer, both felt the same and the car did fine.
i feel bad for the guy with a nissan who needs airbags to tow a single artic cat. lol

I began to check if my 2007 LTZ Tahoe was leveled with the trailer so that the tongue had at least 10-15% tongue weight. My brother has a 2006 Silverado Turbo diesel crew cab 4X4 and towed the 22FK behind it. It drove like a champ! This is when your recommendation was put to play. I measured the height of the Tahoe and notice that my hitch was 22" of the ground and my brothers Silverado was only 17 inches. The problem was due to the fact that the 2007 LTZ comes standard with 20 inch wheels versus the Silverado's 16" which increased my hitch height. The attitude was sitting extremely high which was causing the truck to sway out of control. I purchase a different reciever hitch bar that had a 14 " drop versus the current 8" drop. I swapped the recievers and BINGO the ride was much better because the truck hitch and receiver where leveled. Thank you very much! Please enjoy your wknd!
Glad it worked out for you Loy. You never said if you were using an equalizer hitch, set up right they work wonders, I use the 1000lb bars.

I wouldn't expect too much cost savings by going diesel. I'm towing a little bigger trailer than you, but when I towed it with a Dodge V-10 truck I got 6 mpg, and when I tow it with our GMC diesel I get 9 mpg. Granted that is an improvement of 50% in fuel mileage, but it is still just a 3 mpg improvement, and around here diesel cost 50 cents a gallon more than gasoline does. When I fill up with diesel I start to wonder if driving a diesel is costing me more money than it is saving. I don't think you save enough to make an argument for a diesel based on cost. A diesel does tow better though.
9 mpg??? Sounds like you need a Cummins!!

My towing vehicle is a '99 Dodge 2500 4x4 with the CTD. If I'm just towing my quad, I either load it in the back of my truck or haul it with a 5x8 utility trailer. If I'm hauling more than one, I have a 6.5x16 utility trailer that I tow. The dodge has 160,000 miles and still gets 19 mpg highway unloaded. Love that truck.

Hi Teebone56,
We've got a 2001 Silverado 2500 Extended Cab, 6L-V8, 4.10 rear end. Tow our new '07 Can-Am Outlander 650 MaxXT with a new 5x9 utility trailer from Great Wolf Trailers right outside Long Pond, PA (just a few miles north from the Pocono NASCAR track). Custom built in just a weeks time. 3500# axle, 15" tires, 8 tie downs, crank on tongue, A-Frame construction, drop tail gate, 12" rail around 3 sides for about $800. The 5x9's at Lowe's & Home Depot are only 2000# axle rating and were $750. I got the extra axle rating so I could haul Pellets for my pellet stove in the off season. He has a place on Ebay and a website: greatwolftrailers.com. GREAT guy to deal with!!!! Highly recommended.
During camping season, tow a 2004 Laredo 27RK 5th Wheel.

Not to mention the extended warranty until 2011. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy it. I'll post pictures if I do.
