The tires have to go over the fender wells, but it fits lenght wise. Tailgate closed, good fit.

Look a little further back, into Toyota's, with say 80,000 miles. Those still have alot of life at 80,000.

I used to drive a '91 Sonoma and my Warrior fit well. It was a long bed though. The tail gate would ALMOST close when it had a toolbox in there. I didn't use it, plus it was a POS that was breaking so out it came. The wheel wells were JUST wide enough to fit my Warrior. That doesn't mean that I didn't put a dent in one of the wells... Had a friend with a Warrior in a newer S-10 that could close the gate as well. And I don't remember him riding over the fenders, or smaking them. This was the old TBI 4.3 with a 3.23 rear (or something like that.) Mileage was in the mid teens.
With the F-150 with the 4.6 V-8 I'm pushing high 13s to 15 in town (it can vary tank-to-tank depending on where I'm going, and how I watch my driving style) to over 19 on the highway. 75MPH highway run got me 18 and change including about 20 miles in town. That included going over a steep long pass (I5's "Grapevine") both ways. A purely flat highway and keeping a reasonable speed, I wouldn't be suprised to push 20MPG. That's with the 3.55 gears which are good mileage gears but can make for poor pullers. However, at your loads, that's nothing.

Sounds good. Not sure if they were still using the 700R4 (I think that's the name) tranny, they last about 120K. Our's went out at 120K and then the OD clutches went out around 180K (60K on that tranny) and the TC had stopped locking at some time before that.

I'd stay away from the 3.0 six on the rangers. Transmission problems, and not cheap to fix. I've had my 95 for 11 years and 192,000 miles. It is just the 2.3, but have pulled a trailer with two quads just about everywhere we've ever ridden.
Also loaded one in the back. Gate closed, but getting over the wheels was a problem. Made a ramp out of 2x6 and solved that problem.

That is the only problem with Toyotas, they command a steep price around here regardless of miles. recon99, you are right, the 4 bangers are out for you. Even the smaller 6's don't have enough juice to pull 3 quads, a trailer, your buddies, and all of their gear. I was using my brother's Jimmy w/ the 4.3 pulling a 18' car transport with my Quadracer on it, and it struggled to much for my tastes also. That weight would be close to what you would be pulling with a lighter trailer and 3 quads. My opinion, if you really HAVE to pull 3 quads, look for a 1/2 ton truck. The fuel mileage on the smaller trucks isn't that much better, and you will be much safer hauling a trailer with a longer wheelbase and a heavier truck. Otherwise go for the biggest engine you can, and longbed would be even better. Remember, there is a lot more to towing than having the power to yank a trailer around. Also, know how much weight you need to be able to tow before buying the truck. I would figure 3 quads, gear, and a small trailer to be about 2500lbs. That can be handled with a smaller truck, but not by all of them.

Well, if your trailer is only 200 or 400 lbs then you should be around 2k or less towing. Yes, you may also be able to find a car to tow that weight also. The best bet is for something big with rwd, 4 doors, and disc brakes. A body on frame truck would still be a better tool for the job though.

I think i've finally decided to get a small pickup, something like an s10 or ranger. Will my warrior fit in the back of a shortbed truck with the tailgate closed, or will I need a longbed to get the tailgate closed? I know I could figure this out myself if I took some measurements and compared them to a shortbed truck, but if someone could save me the work that would be great. Thanks

Thanks, that definitely opens up some more options for me. I can't believe how hard it's been to find a decent low mileage truck with a v6 for under $6,000. The only one that met my requirements at all so far is a 2001 ranger with 47,000 miles, but it's only a regular cab with the little 3.0 v6, and a carfax search showed that it was a victim of hurricane katrina, so that's out too. Tuesday i'm going to look at a 94 s10 with the 4.3 vortech, but it's the dale earnhardt edition, and i'm no dale fan, so I don't think that's gonna fly either.

I'm looking at any kind of small truck I see, and i'm not coming up with anything reasonable. I found one toyota truck, it was a 95, 160,000 miles, and they were asking around 5k for it.
The extended cab part is what's really making this tough, because only about 1/4 of the trucks I see are extended cab. I never had a truck before, but I don't think I would be able to deal with the limited space a regular cab has.

Since you seem to know your stuff, how much power would I need in a truck to haul 3 quads? (one in the bed, 2 on a small trailer). I figured that the 4 cylinders wouldn't have enough grunt for this, but what about the smaller v6's, like the 3.0 rangers? I'd rather go for the bigger 6's, but i'd probably settle for a smaller engine if it can get the job done.

I figure it'll be about 2000 lbs total. The quads and gear add up to about 1200, and the trailer is 200. I'm probably going to shoot for a 4.0 ford or 4.3 chevy, I don't really have a preference.
I already ruled out a fullsize truck. I drive a lot, usually about 2 hours a day, so gas prices are really going to add up. Originally I wasn't going to get a truck, but i'd like to get one so my dad can sell his durango. The only reason he's keeping it anymore is to occasionally pull a trailer, and that's not enough to justify keeping insurance on it, keeping it inspected and maintained, and taking up space in the garage. If I knew a big car like a T-bird would be able to safely tow a 400lb trailer with 2 quads i'd get one of those and save on gas and insurance, but I just don't know. Hmm, I guess they do weigh damn near as much as a small truck, maybe it would get the job done?

I think I finally found the truck i've been searching for. It's a 93 gmc extended cab longbed, 4.3 auto, 2 wheel drive. 90,000 miles, they're asking 4,300, and it looks to be in mint condition. I'm test driving it after work tomorrow and if I don't find anything wrong on the test drive hopefully i'll be bringing it home.

I know someone that does transmissions for pretty cheap, so I guess i'll take the chance. One of my buddies had an s10 with the same engine/tranny, and it had 241,000 miles on the original engine and trans, so I guess all of them didn't have trouble with the tranny crapping out at 120k.
