Hey Mac, If your truck is a 3/4 ton or bigger you should be fine. The road between the border and LaPaz is pretty nice,The only REAL narrow and windy part is the mountains just before you get to Santa Rosalita,,But as soon as you see the Sea of Cortez and that BLUE water,It's all good!!Have fun,My dad just got back from a trip to Punta Colorada,,Just south of LaPaz on the East Cape..Fishing was Incredible..Check out Loretto and Mulligee on the way just before lapaz. 2 great smaller towns that are hard to leave. Also a trip west to Todos Santos,,1.5 hrs is a must,,COOL Town. Okay I'll shut up,,I really mis the place all of a sudden,,Wish I was goin with you. Have fun. JJ

P.S. Keep a cooler full of Ice cold cokes and some candy ( jolly ranchers and stuff like that) for the boys at the "checkpoints" and things will go a little smoother,,I have even carried last years Playboys and handed them out,, Later JJ

I don't know how much your ATV weighs but hanging it off the back of the pickup would sure put a lot of weight way behind the rear axle. Putting it up on a rack above the cab is going to make things kind of top heavy and would cause quite a bit of sway IMO. You stated you did not want to take a trailer but that would seem to be the best course of action. If you get a small enouh one you could haul it back on top of the lumber rack.

Have you been to Mexico before? Reason I ask is because we go to Mazatlan, have a son who lives there, and leaving an ATV can have repercussions when you come back across the border. Be sure to check it out.

I will be leaving the ATV in Baja so I dont want to drag a trailer. I was thinking of beefing up the top my lumber rack, or build a hitch mount for the rear of the ATV and have the front wheels on the lowered tailgate? One issue for sure is ruff roads and NO SPEED limits for 2000+ miles? Im not sure about the long term flex on ethier idea?

Hey MacD. Checkout my profile, I built just what you are talkin about... works great. I overbuilt it and am able to haul two bikes. Let me know what you think!

I don't know if it would work or not, but could you load the atv first, and then a bike on either side of it. Get a front bumper bike carrier for the 3rd bike. Just a thought...

I have thought about a trailer, but have been trying to avoid it. We are driving from Northern Ca to La Paz, almost 1500 miles of very tight roads. I picked up an old TRX 300 for almost nothing, which will be considered brand new for down there! We have a place down there to store it so Im not too worried about that. Im thinking a descent trailer would be more than the ATV?
