My guess is that those locking hubs are aftermarket. You could put the stock hubs back on, and reinstall the vaccum actuator, or get a posi-lock

Being as I'm a member of FBK (take a look at the list of threads in this forum and figure it out) I'd recommend the F-250. It's got a REAL back seat. I rode in the back seat of a late 90s Chevy Ext. Cab from Fresno to Pismo. That was the worst 3 hours of my (traveling) life. If rescue was to transport one of his prisoners in that back seat he'd be sued for cruel and unusual punishment. (I rode back shotgun in an F-350 CC as not wanting to endure that pain again.)

As others have said the manual lockers are a GOOD thing. I know someone who had his hubs go out on him. He now has manuals.

What motor is in that truck anyways? OPEC hopes it's the 5.4 gasser or the V-10. What gears? Long or short bed?

im a little bit more of a chevy fan but i would suggest you buy the ford.that way you have a heavyer truck incase some time down the line you you find yourself needing to tow larger trailers. the 1500 is gonna be limited to light towing capacities.

OK i found a good deal on two trucks now i got to choose

#1 1999 ford f250 4x4
#2 2000 chevy silverado 1500 non 4x4 (4x2)

both are $15000 both are lifted to exact same height #2 has a nice fabtech lift #1 unkown not as nice
both have minor scrathes and dents buth #1 has a missin/broken off tailgate handle

#1 pros- its an f 250 4x4 crew cab more friends fit f250 F250 i always wanted an f250 so its a big deal
cons- broken tailgate handle ugly paint (blueish) old ass tires 4x4 has manual locking hubs

#2 pros-nice whit color leather interior nice lift custom grille lights new tires nice forgot what kind though
cons- (500 smaller )extended cab onlt like 4 normal sized ppl not to mention my fat as friends the big one not a 4x4
IS THERE NE WAY TO CHANGE MANUAL LOCKING HUBS SO I DONT HAVE TO GET OUT EVERYTIME THERE SHOULD BE MAKE EM LIKE AUTOMATIC DOESNT SEEM LIKE THERE IS A WAY THOUGH

It runs on gas never delt with diesel so i prefer it and a v10 ive herd the v8 is too sluggish
it would be an easy choice to me f250 4x4 crew cab but the chevy just seems to be in better condition
at 100 000 miles would the f250 still be running strong or would i be runing into many problems

the truck ihave now is really beat up and f100 custom so its old
and i want the next truck to be reliable

I'm a die hard chevy fan BUT I purchased a F250 for a truck. The crew cab will hold more and tow more safely. The manual hubs are a good thing. The stock lockers have issues and the manual won't break or not engage like most auto lockers will.

bottom line is that your the one buying it so get what you want

I had a 2000 Chevy Z-71. I liked the truck but, it wasn't a crew cab and didn't have the capabilities to tow my growing list of toys I then, bought my '01 Ford F250 PSDI can tow my toys and still have more room. You didn't mention if it was a gas or PSD. The fuel mileage on my F250 is comparable to my Z-71 around town, about 15 mpg, on the hwy, it depends on how much of my foot, I have into the floor boardBut, biggest difference is hauling my toysI get 15 mpgwhich is greatcompared to my Z-71, it got 10 mpgIf you see your toy list growing, I would suggest the F250. This is based on my own experience. Good Luck

The Manual Hubs are the only way to go. You might get a little mud on your boots when you get out to lock them in but when you get back in you"ll know there locked in. I had a 4x4 chevy that when stuck you would engage the 4 wheel from inside. Only one thing it need to roll just a little to engage, you know the rest of the story.

Ford all the way! You can always repaint it. I'd leave the manual hub locks alone. I wouldn't trust the electronic/vacuum opperated ones. Atleast you know that when you turn that hub knob, it turns and locks in. Not much goes wrong with them unless you get water in them. I got water in my hubs on my 77. Easy fix too. The Ford you want is bigger which is better. Didn't have much wrong with the Fords I don't think. They look wayy better too! Do it right the first time and go with Ford, you won't be disappointed.
