No doubt. Hauling a large trailer plus two quads mounted up hhigh on top of the rails.

3/4 ton, Diesel.

I'm partial to GMC/Chevy but that's my own bias. The latest Ford 3/4 ton has some nice towing features.

With the weight you want to haul, definately a 3/4 or one ton. I got the one ton because it offered more load capacity, didn't cost much more, and rode just as smooth as the 3/4. Ford that is, GM or Dodge may not.

I would also stay with a large block such as the V10 Ford or 8.1 GM if you want a gas motor. Hemi might work but sucks gas like it owns Mobil. Actually the other two suck gas too but at least you have the towing power to go with it.

The best route is a diesel. 17city on up to 23hwy is what I get with my one ton Crew Cab 4x4 Ford with 7.3 when not towing. The new 6.0 motor doesn't seem to get as good of mileage but has more power. I get 10 mpg towing my 34 ft 5th wheel with my ATV trailer behind it.

The Duramax and Cummins will also give you similar mileage and easily tow your setup.

Diesels are more money up front but the longer you keep it, the more it pays you back. And resale is higher.

I've owned both the Duramax and the Cummins and the Cummins has more power, hands down!! The Duramax seemed to tow better just because of the Allison tranny but the Cummins 600 definately has more grunt. I've hooked bumpers with a couple buddies rigs and they were all believers

I have a 2001 F250 SC 4x4 8' bed v10 with 88K miles. Knock on wood, mine has been as reliable as a stone, it's never had a problem. It tows my 7K lb boat and a buddy's 9K lb boat without any problems and if I'm not careful, it's too easy to forget the boat is back there. The v10 develops power at a much higher rpm than most other motors, it redlines at over 6K rpm. It's thirsty though, 12 mpg in mixed driving and as low as 8 mpg when towing.

My Dad has a new Dodge 1 ton 4x4 dually with the Cummins and 6 speed Allison transmission. It's a good truck and can tow like a SOB but it's not as easy to drive or as comfortable as my F250. Neither of us can put our finger on the exact differences but we both agree that my truck is the easiest to drive and his truck is best if the load is over 10K lbs. He's getting 18 mpg in mixed driving and 12 mpg pulling a 12K lb 5th wheel.

I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse than drive a Chevy truck. They are good for old men and fat guys but theya re not in the same league as the Ford and Dodge. If you plan to abuse your truck, don't get a Chevy, they just don't hold up as well.

6 speed MANUAL transmission made by Allison. Sorry I wasn't clear the first time.

As everyone else says, definately go with the 3/4 or 1-ton route. Diesel preferably. Of course if you're going to Pismo, 4x4 is probably a given.

If you're looking to purchase new, Ford has really upped the ante in the 3/4-1 ton market with the Super Duty lineup. They finally squared away the GVWR numbers so they make sense. Prior to 2005 an F-250 CC LB 4x4 PSD had about 800lb of available capacity. So if you buy used, get an F-350 SRW over an F-250. As rescue said, you're looking at $45K+ in the central valley (Bakersfield, Fresno, Merced, etc.)

The big gas motors do a good job, but your gas bill will be insane. A friend pulls a large (37-38') fifth wheel and gets down about 6MPG while crawling up Cuesta grade @ 35 MPH would out in 2nd on his '03 F-350 SRW CC LB 6.8V-10. And he's searching for more power. Chip didn't do much. Looking at gears and maybe a supercharger.

If a toy box is in your future, or even remotely looks like it, get the diesel (whatever make...they are all good motors.) They all have excellent trannies. Most room in a CC goes to Ford, with the GM twins coming in next and Dodge's wanna-be CC last. That's important for tall passengers. Interior and ride seems to go to the GM twins. Dodge tends to win in the price category. Ford seems to top the price list.

Again, Ford has the best payload and towing ratings of the group across the board. The available integrated brake controller seems to be only be bested (if that) by the Brake Smart brake controller (taps into the brake lines). The IBC works with the vehicles ABS system.

Yeah, I'm a Ford guy. No, I don't own one...unless I win tonight.

Are you sure about that? Unless he's put it in aftermarket. THe Dodge AT is 48RE (IIRC) from Dodge. And the 6 speed stick is a ZF (formerly Borg-Warner). And I think the ZF is the same as what's in the Fords.

The 6 speed Allison ATs are for Class VI, VII & VIII trucks. Not even in the same league as these Class II & III trucks.

I was wrong in some parts. TREMAC bought out Borg-Warner. The T56 is in the Viper and Crossfire.

The Cummins is backed by a New Venture NV5600. With a late availability of a Getrag (assuming as all other 6-speeds in Chryslers are Getrag) G56 (at least it's a late-availability on the Power Wagon so assuming the same on the Rams w/Cummins). DymlerChrysler sold off New Venture Gear.

I agree with the Cummins engine and 3500 SRW. $200 diff to go to the 3500SRW from a 2500. Its just a set of aux leaf springs for extra bed capacity (which you say you are going to use).

I don't think the short box will save you all that much in turning radius when you're giving up a lot of comfort the extra wheel base of an 8 foot box gives you when towing. Especially when using the ultimate rack.

Either way, someone posted that Chevy Ford crew cabs have the most room.

Not anymore, check out the new Mega Cab Dodge. Biggest cab and a shortbox. It may be the best option for you. Plus you can get the drop down DVD player and full color screen Navigation.

Welcome to the Forum:

I had a set up just like you have described: 2000, Chevy 1500 Z-71, extended cab, had a rack, that slid in the bed, it carried 2 large quads on it, and equipment underneath. Towed a 21 foot trailer with equalizer bars. Total weight was approx 12,500 pounds. (I have the weigh certs somewhere) I moved things around to adjust the weight, I was able to get it level, however, I was about 800#'s over weight on the axles. So, it didn't matter where I put the stuff, I was over weight.

I opted to move up to a Ford F250, PSD and haven't looked back. Mileage is the same around town as my Z-71, approx. 15 mpg. On the highway, I get anywhere from 17-22 mpg. Just depends on how much I romp on the pedalBiggest difference is pulling a load. On my Z-71 I would get on avg. 10 mpg. With my PSD, I'm getting 15 mpg at 65-68 mph. Getting up to pass on I-5 while headed to Pismo is a breezeI'm at 80 before I know it. So I would strongly suggest anything above a 1/2 ton. I think right now all the manufacturers are making good vehicles. I think it depends on if your a FordChevy or Dodge manAlso, look at where you might be in 3-4-5 years. Will you want another quad? or a toy trailer?? If so, plan ahead and buy the vehicle nowEspecially if your looking new. I know around Central Ca. a new F250 PSD is around $45,000 and can go as high as $62,000 with lift and engine improvements.

Good Luck on your DecisionBR>

What does your trailer weigh?

Posted by: deanz400

just got a 05 ford f-450 with the 6.0 to bad it's the work truck nice cab layout like the intergrated electric brake unit ,, plus built in aux power switches... we bought it at work for 43 k ..

Posted by: ostrich

I pull a 27 ft. travel trailer with a bed high carrier with a 50 c.c. under that, add in all the coolers of beer and pop, firewood, ramps and everthing else for a week, my drw f-350 isn't really stressed, but you notice the weight. The bed high haulers for a short box load lengthwise, this may interfer with visibility in most mirrors, thats why I built mine to load from the side. As far as diesel or gas, I would go diesel if you're going to use it much, milage and longevity are much greater, plus if you ever move up in sizeon your trailer, you've got enough truck, the way vehicles depreciate these days this is a big point, and diesels depreciate at a slower rate it seems

Posted by: ostrich

speaking technically jaybee, my cooler is all I can pick up, and the wifes is a six-pack lighter!

Posted by: ostrich

good job digging up a thread thats been dead for over a year cummonsme. Oh and real intellegent post, maybe you are a market analyst for dodge, ford and chevy also make trucks that fit other peoples needs. My fluffy ford does just as well as your allmighty dodge.

Posted by: yamahawarriormods

diesol for sure

Posted by: snigbertese

Id suggest a 6.0 chevy crew cab. Get a custom tuned pcm and a few more bolt on mods and the truck will have mpore than enough power to pull.

Posted by: mcriderbmw

I want opinions on which truck will best fit my needs. 1/2 ton? 1/2 "Z" ton? 3/4 ton? gas? diesel? gmc? chevy? ford?

To haul:
1) 2 quads with the ATV ultimate rack on the bed of the truck.
2) travel trailer - 24-26 feet in length, self contained.

Home base central california:
Going to pismo dunes, the desert areas, and the local mountains.

Would like to get a quad cab w/ a short box.
Most miles are in the city to work daily and back (approx 40 rt)
BUT, also want it to be able to do the job on the weekends.
Plan to use the trailer at least 6 times a year and lots in the summer months.
Don't really want a 1 ton dually as a daily rider.

Thanks for your help..

Posted by: JeffinTD

With weight up that high plus a trailer, a dually would be more stable and aren't that much more than a 3/4 ton. I use mine as a daily driver and there are narrow streets where I live, so SRW 1 ton was the best compromise for me.

Its always better to get a little more truck than you think you need. In the next few years (or however long you plan to keep the truck) could you see yourself looking for a bigger trailer, or a toyhauler?

Anyway, Diesel is the only way to get something that big and get decent fuel economy.

I've always been a Ford man, but that 6.0 scares me (see JD Powers), so it was either give up a full size crew cab (dodge) or go Chevy. The Chevy's have a really plush ride, but I preferred how the Cummins runs, so I went Dodge.

Newer 6.0's seem to be better... so look at and drive all three.

Posted by: KVRMUDDRUNNER

Ford all the way. But thats all I drive. My 77 F-250 4x4 regular cab pulls my 21foot enclosed trailer pretty good. Motor has over 176,000 miles on her and its still got the original clutch! Body is rusted pretty bad and has no exhaust but it gets the job done, hahaha. Pretty bad when yer trailer looks better than yer truck! I'd go with the F250 or F350 super duty powerstrokers. They have the big truck market for sure. Flat bed would be nice so you could unload an atv or two from the bed without takin off the trailer. Good luck with your choice

Posted by: KVRMUDDRUNNER

AMEN to that!

Posted by: RaptorRider619

Your going to need an F-250 or Chevy 2500 to pull a trailer that big with a couple quads. I would also recommend diesel. I drive a Chevy 1500 Z71 and all the trailer dealers I have talked to said I could only pull a 21 foot trailer maximum going up the steep hills to the desert. So if i were you I would get a bigger truck like the F-250 or Chevey 2500. If your a dodge man they are alright too.

GO CUMMINS, 6 in a row is the only way to tow. Go six speed for even better towing. I could pull circles around ford. (when the ford is not in the shop) and the cheby. The smaller cab I can live with for the non worrying of the Reiliable CUMMINS.

I have had both Ford and Dodge trucks. I like both. However, I think the Dodge is a better buy. The Dodge drives better. There is no question. Ford has a nicer interior in my opinion. And I like the look of the Ford. However, you can't beat a Cummins. I don't care if it is or is not the most powerful out there. The fact is, for what you want to do, it has more than enough and it is tried and true. That is what these folks do. They build diesel engines. Period. And they are darn good at it. Also you get a inline six with fewer moving parts and fewer problems and I know more than one person with over 400k on a Cummins diesel. But drive them both. See which you like best. Powerstrokes are nice too. I myself don't care for Chevy.

Our old shop bought a brand new 99'? dodge Cummins diesel flatbed dually a few years back ...great truck right? Well it didn't make it a month before it was in the shop for engine trouble...was there a recall?

Also another guy would always get a new dodge every year or two ...well the first and second year of the v10 both his trucks had tranny problems (would not downshift) now dodge did step up and fix his trucks and stand behind their product but sucks cause you have to drive a little rental when you own a big bad dodge..

My vote is for the duramax

LOL! I didn't realize the thread was so old. I didn't even look at the date. To each their own on the truck thing. I guess various peoples experiences vary.

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/04/03/chrysler-ceo-calls-owner-of-million-mile-dodge-ram/

I think all three make nice vehicles. It's really just a matter of preference.

Pssst...Chevy's really are for old men.

Just kidding!

Posted by: CummonsME

Cummins is the only answer. Dodge will continue to hold the market on the strongest machine as Ford is only worried about fluf and who knows what GM is thinking but every one I have owned has been total garbage interior wise and strength wise. Simply said GMAC stands for "God Make A Car", should be GDMAC! I bought a 98 Blaser for my wife and the interior fell apart before the first set fo tires wore out!!!!
