We had a good downpour in the afternoon yesterday. Just about 10 minutes though. Today it's just humid again. Clear skies.

I spent 4 hours this morning washing and waxing (3 times) my G and I go out this afternoon and it's rains for a couple of minutes. LOL! Amazing what happens when you live with someone for significant amount of time

I don't coach, but 2 in volleyball have us running around way to MUCH!!!

It would be great to meet you at Pismo We'll be there from Saturday the 17th to Sunday the 25th. Let me know and we'll arrange something

It took 5 hours to get to San Luis Obispo and 6 to get back. I can't see dragging the trailer up there when Glamis is 2 hours away down here

It is a bit odd not having my son around but it think he will enjoy his time at school.

Moving him in was a trip. Most of the other kids had the normal stuff- computer, clothes, Ipod, school supplies. My son was a bit "better prepared to study"

He brought:
Golf clubs, shoes, shirts ,etc
Back pack, tent, camping supplies, etc
Fishing poles and gear (fresh and salt water)
2 surf boards, wet suits, etc
Bike
skateboard
Desh top and lap top computer
Surround sound stereo system

Yes, junior is really set up for a full college experience. Hopefully, he will be able to fit in some time to go to class and study every now and thenimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">
fish tank (for the chicks) (it's working so I'm told)

Kinda wierd they replaced the alternator because it won't turn over. batterys turn it over, then the alternator re-chsarge the batterys.
Recharging both batterys in full and then load testing them should have been the first thing to do. Go figure............ The alternator was probably more money

They were about a wash give or take a few $$$. I think they didn't charge me because they could of easily diagnosed both of them as badand really taken me to the cleanersimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">but because they only bothered to check the alternator and I was technically stranded a few days later, the service rider I deal with took care of meatleast that's how I am looking at it So, now I have a new alternator and 2 new batteries for the price of the alternator. I think I can live with that

I hear ya!!! I've received around 5 of those through yearsEven with my "get out of jail card"Still didn't help. meter maids are in it for the $$$ However, $51 is steep. It's only $10 plus another $10 for the "Administration" fee

As a matter of fact, I am not running one right nowHowever, I do have an inclination that a pink piece of paper might be coming my wayEvery day I fight the urge to put the plate on the PSD.

LJ got that ticket too.

Boss recently bought an Audi A8 for his wife. They don't even offer a mounting bracket for the front plate. "So you guys sold me a car that's not even legal in the state of California?" No ticket yet. So he mounted the plate on a spare bumper he got that was SUPPOSED to have a bracket...it didn't.

Jettas have the same thing, no place to mount a front plate. However, for around $70 or so (IIRC) you can by a kit (for the Jetta) from the dealer to make your car legalThat's wrong! Might be the same for the Audi. Of course, there is some drilling involved.

I understand what your sayingI think on smaller cars with fiberglass/plastic front ends its different. I also think the state should come down on the manufacturersfor selling cars that do not meet the state requirements for vehicles being able to bolt on 2 license plates. Of course mine does, I just elect not to run a front plate

lol The body shop that did the work on my car didnt even give me the bracket for the liscense plate. So im sure its not cheap. I think if i had to i could mount the plate behind the bumper in the lower opening. May or may not be legal there.

On one of the stang boards a guy used to sell a plate mount that went in the lower opening(i beelive) that was motorized and would retract for normal driving/shows and extend infront of the bumper if you got introuble. Cant find it anymore though.

I would think having a moving license plate would be illegal as well.

Update

Well I got the generator on our trailer running last night. Actually started right up with fresh gasoline. Yeah, got me stumped on that. Not much comes back on Google. I found one thread on rv.net that the person was saying they only got it to get full power to charge the batteries when running on shore power.

Posted by: rescuediver

I think I have read every thread over there I can get a hit on every which way I did a search. I posted some pictures on my page. For some reason I need to wait for the system to reload before I can approve them. Last time I just hit the approve button
What a mess it is. I talked to the previous owner, he really didn't admit to anything. I just can't figure out why he did what he did. He couldn't even remember how the wires connected as they came out of the gray conduit. Last thing I want to do is wire it wrong and cause damage.

Yikes. It doesn't look too terribly bad though. Looks like they ran parallel wires to reduce wire size (that's why there are 2 blacks (120V) and 2 whites (neutral)). Green is ground.

First of all, that receptacle is mounted on the wrong side of the 4-square cover. Take it off and flip it over. The cover should come out and away from the box adding extra capacity to the box (approx. 6 cubic inches, it will actually be marked). The receptacle itself should be marked to what conductors belong where. The 120V line should be the brass screw. Neutral to the silver screw and ground to the green screw. Ground, I believe, should be to the u-ground pin at the top.

I'm staring at this wiring trying to get my head around it and I think I have it.

Out of the genny you have the pvc flex with the paralleled wires. that goes to a 4S box. From that 4S box you have some Romex to another 4S box with the 125V/30A RV receptacle. The trailer power panel then plugs into this receptacle. All of the wiring should be sized to carry the generator (58A). I believe you can get by with a #6. I need to check with the supervisor to make sure I'm using the right column of the NEC table 310-16. Though RV's are exempt from the NEC. Makes sense to go by it for safety.

Just looking at that Romex it's WAY undersized. It looks like #10 at best. The feed from the generator look like #8, maybe #10. Generator is producing 7000W, so that's about 58 amps. #10 is rated to 30A, so (2)#10 would be rated to 60A.

I think you need #6/(2)#10 from the generator completely through to the power panel. Or at least to that receptacle. I'm assuming the generator has a circuit breaker on it. What size breaker is in the power panel?

One thing is that all of those metallic boxes need to be bonded with the ground wire.

My take on the best thing to do would be to extend the wiring from the generator solidly through to that receptacle. Generally we will pigtail a receptacle. Basically you put short wires coming off of the receptacle and wire nut those to the feeders. But at 30A or bigger, we may run direct. Either way, you'll want to put like a #12 green or bare copper wire directly to the metal 4S boxes and connect that to the ground. This will help to clear a short to that box.

Ugly ASCII art coming up:

Generator ---flex--- Receptacle - Plug ---cord--- Panel

Wow that got to a long post.

Yeah I don't know why people screw with stuff. I guess maybe because they had it parked at a park for a while, if I recall correctly.

Looks like that cover is sitting there. Might be able to flip it over and screw it down. Most likely a 10-32 or 10-24 screw. But I don't see a female ear there to screw into. You do need a cover for that box with the exposed Romex. My guess is those red wire nuts connected the generator lead to that Romex.

Quick fix looks like you'll need:

3/4" lock ring for the flex into the box.
Then slip that grey bushing that's in the corner between the box and door over the end. That protects the wire.
New red wire nuts for connecting the blacks together and the whites together. Maybe a red or yellow nut for the grounds. Add a #12 from the box to the gen feed and Romex.
4S cover to finish it off.

I'd check that that Romex does connect those two boxes. I'm 90% sure it does.

Understand that/i>

I am with you on the cover being wrong. Conductors? meaning wires?
I'll have to check the rest.

I'm staring at this wiring trying to get my head around it and I think I have it.

This was all just spinning in my headYou are making sense of it/b>

The 4S box is the receptacle box, if so, I am with you.

Correct about the romex going to another 4S box where the trailer power cord plugs into it. This is behind a panel that says 11-125-volt AC, 60 Hz, 30 Ampheres Supply. Safety is good/b>

Don't know if the Romex is stock or has been replaced. I'll get the size. Lost me thereAre you saying with two #10's I should be rated at 60A?

I think you need #6/(2)#10 from the generator completely through to the power panel. Or at least to that receptacle. I'm assuming the generator has a circuit breaker on it. What size breaker is in the power panel?

Is it #6? (2) #10? either one? or both? Which receptacle are we talking about? the one with the generator or the one with the trailler power cord? I saw two circuit breakers on the side of the generator. I'll a have to check what they are.

One thing is that all of those metallic boxes need to be bonded with the ground wire.

Will check on that. If not, can I change them to plastic ones to remove metal from the equation?

So, with this statement; your saying just wire the romex directly from the end of the gray conduit, then fbring the other end of the conduit to the receptacle where the power cord is to the trailer?

Wow that got to a long post.

Very helpful though/b>

They only used it once or twice a year. And he tries to be a handy-man!

I really don't know, I'll check it out tonight. I think I might have some screws to secure it down. A female ear? Yes I will, don't think I have top at the house, will probably just buy a new one. Your guess is probably correct on the red wire nuts to the Romex.

Quick fix looks like you'll need:

3/4" lock ring for the flex into the box.

I think it's laying next to the box

Then slip that grey bushing that's in the corner between the box and door over the end. That protects the wire.

Ok

Lost me on the #12 from the box to the gen feed and Romex?

I'd check that that Romex does connect those two boxes. I'm 90% sure it does.

Skinner, thanks for all your helpI might need morebut I think I have a handle on it.

Now I see them at the top. I was looking at the bottom earlier. Durrr.

When you go and play with the trailer next snap a photo of the inside of the circuit breaker panel for the trailer. Want to see if it's set up for 120V or 120/240V. That's a lot of stuff to run through a 30A breaker (one leg of the generator), which has about 24A of rated capacity (80%). Doesn't look like there is actually a main breaker for that panel. That will show how that cable is wired. And that panel schedule leaves a lot to be desired. 4 breakers, 3 columns of stuff. Maybe that 30A IS the main breaker.

How about a size on the cord for that panel? Looks like probably a #10, maybe a #8, type SJOW (Service Junior (300V) Oil Weather).

I think you posted before on the generator. Any model numbers or possibly a plate somewhere with information? Want to see if it's all on 120V or 240V. I have a feeling it's 120V as it should have popped those breakers when you started it with them taped together.

If I get enough info I'll draw you up a single line diagram for the trailer for record.

As to that little bundle of joy with the wires capped, or those the ones that go into the wall and disappear? If you know a telephone/data guy, see if you can borrow their tone generator and inductive amplifier to trace those wires down. Maybe they are dead ended somewhere else.

It appears that there are two wires leading to that fuse block with the (4) 20A type ATC fuses. A gray cable and a red type of cable. Looks like the red is going towards the generator in the background of pic 19.

I think that's enough homework.

Posted by: rescuediver

I might know someone here at work that has the tone generator thing your talking about. I'll check.

The red wire in 19 actually goes to the convertor. I'll need to check on the rest to confirm.

Thanks again

It's an Onan Marquis 7000 Model Number 7NHMFA26105C. Tape was applied after it ground to the door framePrior to that, wires were exposedAlso, when I taped them up, each strand was taped separately, not togetherNot that it matters. When this is all said and done, hopefully it will be done right

If I get enough info I'll draw you up a single line diagram for the trailer for record.

Very Appreciated/u>

Yea, the twinkle in my arseLOL! have a couple friends who might be able to help me thereespecially after taking the cover off the fuse panel and seeing the end of one of the Romex unsecured and taped with electrical tape.

See picture 12;White braided wire goes to the converter box along with the red braided wire you mentioned above. The other white wire (size 8/10, guess 8 though) goes to the other blue twist cap. All other wires disappear into the trailer wall. Oh yes, there is also a ground wire to the frame. My guess is, they go to the fuse panel. then get dispersed to the trailer.

I think that's enough homework. [IMG][/IMG]

Whew, a lot of field trips the last few nightsLOL!

MD. Yes, you do need a 20A fuse inline. You can probably find one at an electronics shop. Fuse will probably be rated at 250V. It should have a #10 wire on the line side (incoming). Like the old barrel style auto fuses were many times rated at 12VDC/250VAC.

Saw the new pics. That breaker panel is a 120/240V single phase 3 wire panel (just like a "normal" house panel.) I can't tell from the pics (too small) how the power cord is connected.

On closer inspection of picture #9, I can see a knockout being used at the bottom of the panel. I can see the neutral coming up to the neutral terminal just above the right 20A breaker. (I think that is the 20A...and I just lost my apostrophe...go figure...) The ground I can see coming over below the breakers across to the ground bus bar on the left. And I think I might be able to see a black wire feeding the right main lug come over from the left side. The left main lug is obscured by the #10 Romex.

I can see 3 white wires terminated on the neutral bus (horizontal bus bar at the top above the breakers.) SO I do think (as noted below) that there are 4 Romex entering. 3 terminated, and one taped off. I wonder if this taped off one is for future power somewhere. Possibly a second AC feed? (I lost my arrow keys and my slash key too!)

It also appears that there are 4 Romex cables coming into the top of th box (makes sense with the 4 breakers. It's an MLO (Main Lug Only) panel with no main. (That's fine. The protection is provided by the service (generator or at the shore power).) Or are we seeing some other wire back there? My assumption is the 2 120V terminals are actually tied together somehow. Maybe one circuit isn't even being used. Which of any of the circuits breakers are used? Which are spare?

As for the bundle of white wires. I'm thinking those are 12V ground/negative whatever you want to call it. I wouldn't doubt a meter from the 12V fuse block on the wall to one of those would be 12VDC. I'm assuming this because of color and the fact that they are not fused and all bound together. A terminal strip would look much nicer for aesthetic reasons. I know someone who has a son who milled a really nice terminal strip from copper and insulating material.

Looking at the 12VDC fuse block pic #5 and your descriptions I think there's an incoming grey wire from the battery. The red wire then connects the fuses and the inverter. I assume the red wire will provide 12VDC to the fuse block when there's 120V present at the generator. This may also provide 12VDC to the converter to go to 120VAC from the batteries.

I think we're pretty close to having this completely figured out.

And my supervisor really liked your friend's elk. Ok, WTF all the keys are working now.

I'll have to check on these questions/b>

As for the bundle of white wires. I'm thinking those are 12V ground/negative whatever you want to call it. I wouldn't doubt a meter from the 12V fuse block on the wall to one of those would be 12VDC. I'm assuming this because of color and the fact that they are not fused and all bound together. A terminal strip would look much nicer for aesthetic reasons. I know someone who has a son who milled a really nice terminal strip from copper and insulating material. [IMG][/IMG]

Hmm, is this person for hire to fix all thisIf so, send me a PM/b>

Looking at the 12VDC fuse block pic #5 and your descriptions I think there's an incoming grey wire from the battery. The red wire then connects the fuses and the inverter. I assume the red wire will provide 12VDC to the fuse block when there's 120V present at the generator. This may also provide 12VDC to the converter to go to 120VAC from the batteries.

Again, something I missednow I am getting madand am embarrassed
don't know how I missed all this?? No need to answer that

Again, will have to check this out.

I think we're pretty close to having this completely figured out.

Good News; We have electricity from the generator into the trailerhooked up the wires and the outlets were showing 120v. So, after plugging the trailer in to the receptacle nothing blew:whew) Still don't know why 220v was being feed to the trailer, when 120v runs everything without a problem

If everyone got fired for taking crappy pictures of electrical panels we'd have to fire the boss. A close 2nd would be GB which we all want fired because he's a moron. Even I have screwed the pooch a few times of pics. We've got about 15-20GB of pics on the server....

You do have to realize that this is something I do for a living. Look at photos and try and figure out WTF is going on. At least I'm not sitting here going "How has someone night died in there yet?"

Looks that way. Or me getting a good shock or two.

I have an 2001, F250, 7.3 powerstroke, crewcab, 4x4, power chip, banks transmission chip, 5" exhaust, 2" lift, Leer "Browning" campershell and bed tray/roller. It is awesome best of all, it gets better fuel mileage then my old '00 chevy Z71

Posted by: ostrich

I have a '02 crew cab 4x4 dually long box w/auto trans, I think the world of this truck, this will be our puller for a long time I think. With the bed full of quads, and the camper behinde us we get @ 12m.p.g.,and theres no hills around here that will slow us down. And that is scaling @18000lbs!

Is there much difference between the older 7.3, newer 7.3 and the new 6.0 engines?

Posted by: maddog56

First 7.3 - 235hp and around 450 torque

Second 7.3 - 255hp or so and about 475 torque

I cant remember if they introduced a 3g or not

New 6.0, around 305hp and 510 torque.

Posted by: ToyKing

Hi All
the biggest diff is the trans way better on the 6.0.The as for power all can be modified for way mor power though the 6.0 will have the most.If you want more info go to thedieselstop.com it most fords

I have 2003 f350 crew cab long box with 3" lift and bigger tires, I like that way it pulls trailers and still has lots of power. Between taking my 6 place sled trailer to the mountain or if i'm pulling my 26' enclosed car race trailer (loaded), and get 16-17 miles per gallon. pulling becomes alot easier with air bag on rear axles increses gas mileage. I've had lots of trucks and nothing pulls or has the power like a f 350. Plus i just order a custom 2004 f 350 so we'll see how that turns out.

Posted by: 1wook

I have a 97 350 CC and love it. I have 33" tires, 3.73 gears, and get 15-16 mpg unloaded going to and from work, 14 pulling a load. My 97 is rated at 225hp and 400 ftlbs, the 95 and 96's are a little less. The supperduties 99+ with the 7.3 are allot more responsive due to more power, different turbo setup, and most have 3.73 gears, they also have an improved tranny. The f250 4x4 superduties also have a solid front axle verses on the older f250's they have the twin traction beam setup that eats up tires. Check out the diesel stop, lots of good information and helpfull people. What year/body style are you looking at?

Posted by: tta583

I have a 99.5 F-350 single rear wheel crew cab long box 4wd. Love it. I pull a 24' enclosed car trailer with ease. If you are shoping for one I would definitly check out the site in the previous post, a lot of good info in their faq's and forums. Just watch out, it is just like anywhere else, a little problem with the truck sometimes turns into an all out "Ford should recall this thing" session.

For the most part the only real things to watch out for are:

The front end. They do tend to like to eat ball joints. Ford does not use greasable ones from the factory. Mine where shot when I bought the truck with only 52K on them. There is also no shortage of threads on getting them to track straight. Basically take them to a real alignment shop, not a dealer. The factory spec is rather wide.

Auto Trans behind a 7.3 seems to be a sticking point for a lot of folks, they would call it weak. For the most part take care of it and don't overload. Common sense stuff. A lot of guys seem to push these things like a Semi intill they find the weak point. If does have a drain plug on the pan. A lot of us like to change out a few quarts of trans fluid during oil changes to keep things fresh.

PS pump seem to be a sticking point for some folks. For the most part the brake booster uses fluid pressure from the PS system to assist in braking. Some trucks have a little difficulty turing the front wheels if stopped with your foot on the brake. Others complain of a whine in the pump. Mine had a little of each that was taken care of, for the most part, by flusing the PS system and replacing the fluid. I could see the difference in the old and new fluid, it was simply time to change it. Took about 15 minutes.

Auto Trans in certain 01 or 02 models. I can not recall but Ford changed a valve of some type in the trans for a period of time in 01 or 02. Caused a lot of problems, enough where they changed it mid year back to the old version. It did not apply to me so I have not bothered to remember it. Ask on the board to make sure you know how to ID the truck should you buy used.

Front Brakes. I think this has gotten better from my model on up as the caliper was updated. Basically they like to warp rotors. Some say it is because the caliper does not retract causing the pad to ride on the rotor building up heat as you drive. I had porblem on mine, warped them within a couple of weeks of a turning and new pads. No real problem, just an upkeep issue. If you do the brakes use good quality pads, turn the rotors, clean and lube all friction points on the caliper. Not had a problem since them. Also, keep the wheels torqued evenly and correctly to keep flex out of the rotor hat.

BTW, make sure the truck has a spare. Mine was ordered without one, I was told it was an option at least in 99. It did not even have the winch up under the bed. Got me on that one, not sure why anyone would not have a spare. Oddly enough it had the winch crank stored under the hood along with the tire tool and it did come with the factory jack. I had to dig up a rim, tire, and the winch.

I think youre torque numbers are a lil low..

Posted by: GuitarPickerathome

I have a 2001 F350 4WD crew cab dually diesel w/chip and 4" SS exhaust. It was 250 hp stock and now is 350, according to the shop. It is a hot rod unloaded. Depending on the wind, speed and terrain, I have gotten anywhere from 14.something mpg to 21.something mpg, but usually it is in the 16.something range. With a high slide in camper, I'll get 11 to 14, depending on the wind. With a 36' very high 5th wheel with double slides, I'll get 10 to 11. Other than with the slide in, the other figures are before the recent addition of the 4" exhaust. On a January trip to Colorado from Missouri, got 11.something at 70 mph across Kansas, 13.something round trip from Denver to Steamboat, and 14.3 from Denver to Goodland, KS. The truck is wonderful.

My local diesel shop (that added the chip and exhaust) says that the 7.3 is vastly superior to the 6.0 and that the hp and torque ratings aren't comparable, since the 6.0's were rated at a much higher rpm. He owns both a 6.0 and a 7.3 himself, and said that Ford came out with the 6.0 only because their 7.3 couldn't meet new emission requirements and it was just a marketing scam to indicate inflated hp and torque ratings in order to sell them.

Get a crew cab if you might haul 4-6 people or 2 people and lots of gear. The dually really adds to the stability of the towing platform and is a safety feature. This past summer I towed my fiver to South Carolina and a week or so after returning a buddy noticed one of my inside tires in the rear was flat. Turned out, I had a sidewall blow out on the way home and I didn't even know it. Had I had single rear wheels, it would have been an accident for sure. On the other hand, duallys get a couple of mpg's worse and single rear wheels.

All in all, it's a wonderful truck that should last me from now on, since I'm putting less than 10K miles on per year for play. It's roomy, very comfortable, extremely powerful and gets pretty good mileage. What more could you want?

Well, once again, late to the party but nevertheless, here's my view of the wonderful Ford Crew Cab.

We USED to have an 83 Ford F-250 with a 460 gasser. It was a long bed, but not long ENOUGH for towing (in my opinion). The longer the wheellbase, the better for towing (and the worse for off-roading). No room in the cab for 'stuff'.

So along comes this fabulous deal on a used 97 F-350 Crew Cab Powerstroke with a utility bed. This was back in 98. We JUMPED on it and have been deliriously happy ever since. Now, instead of trying to put stuff in the back of the bed where we can get to it if we want it while travelling, we just toss stuff in the back seat, and my wife now has room down by her feet (where we USED to stack everything else we thought we might need while on the road). If wifey is happy, EVERYone is happy... My only complaint is that the "Grand Challenger" utility bed is a bit on the heavy side (understatement of the year!) and contributes to uphill problems and a few more stops at the fuel island than others of the same 'breed'. But hey, it gets the job done.

If you want to see it, one of the pictures in my gallery shows our setup.

I have one also, 03 F350 7.3 Diesel FX4 CrewCab Lariat Short box with 4" lift and 35"tires, 4" exhaust wtih Super Chip. I have a few pictures in my album. It tows like a champ, I wonder somtimes if it would tear a tongue off of the trailer if I got on it any harder. On the highway empty it gets around 20 around town 16, if I run it hard it will get around 2 mpg less, towing it will go down acording to how hard I push it but with a 18' enclosed trailer or my 16' flatbed trailer it is around 15.
My only complaint it is the steering, the pump needs to have a little more pressure.

Russ

I've got a 2001 F250 4x4 crew cab. 7.3l auto. Absolutely love it. Great power, pretty decent mileage.
Don't think I would trade it for any other at this point. Still stock. The only drawback to these trucks is that the engines will outlast the electronics in these trucks, everything in it is controlled by modules.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

tta583 pegged it pretty good. I've done upper and lower balljoints at 30,000 miles. i may drive more logging road than most. Blew tranny at 40,000 miles due to driver error. I manually shifted the automatic into 2nd gear. i was going really slow and up steep roads, pulling 30' travel trailer and deck with 4 quads. It doesn't shift into 1st when you do this, you're better off leaving it in drive. PLUS, I shoulda been in 4-low. I did same drive this year in 4-low and it purred into camp. BUT, if you pull, you should consider best tranny cooler, which I've done since, and frequent tranny fluid changes. I pull a lot of heavy loads.

Power steering hasn't been a problem for me.

I have a '99 F350, dually, crewcab, 60HP chip.

There was a 7.3L before the Powerstroke. Different block, and the fuel was injected through pump, into side of cyliner. on the Powerstroke, the fuel is injected into the top of the cylinder, individual injectors. Nothing to compare the pre-Powerstroke 7.3L to the Powerstrke.

Posted by: Quad4Fun

I've ridden in and used many '96/'97 Ford Crew cabs with the Powerstroke. Pulled lots of weight and hardly noticed them behind us. I like the older Ford Body styles.

Posted by: Just4Kicks

Just traded in my 99' F-350 7.3L, crew cab, dually, 4x4 with 4:10 rear end for a new 04' F-350 6.0L, crew cab, 4x4, with 3:73 rear end. Only difference is the motor size and single rear wheel this time. The 7.3L is simply bullet proof but if your looking to buy new you can no longer get it. Like the 6.0L or not, that's all that's availble now unless I'm mistaken...please correct me if I am wrong. I can say this, my new 6.0L has very noticably more usable power than my old 7.3L (higer RPM or not), maybe due to the new tranny or the different size rear-end I don't know but it sure is noticable to me. Check my pics to see my old beast. It would tow whatever I put behind it. Mileage sucked for a diesel (13.5 to 14.0 mpg empty) but I haven't heard of others having this problem. Also, the truck was on its 3rd tranny at just under 100K miles, again I think this is unusual for this truck. I bought that truck with around 50K on it so it could very well have been abused and cleaned up for resale. I told myself I would never buy a used truck agian after that...I know I will eat it on the depreciation but at least I know where the truck has been. My new 6.0L has less than 1000 miles and is getting around 15 mpg city and 17.5 mpg hwy and should get better...I hope. Just hope Ford has worked out the kinks on the new motor...first year had plenty of problems but that tends to be the case for a lot of 1st year models. Good luck.

Posted by: confusedbuyer

your bad mileage was from that hill you have to take everyday to get back from Palm Springs! The tranny.... that's bad! could be bad dealership/mechanic. These trucks really need tranny fluid and filter changed regularly. Also, I put in the biggest tranny cooler I could get. my truck is the exact same as your old one. The 4:10 gears are lower and should have more pull and grunt, so if the 3:73 ratio is pulling better, must be a better tranny and engine in the 6.0L. Even if previous owner was hard on it, once tranny got rebuilt first time, that shoulda been it.

did you put a performance chip in your '99? I put in 60 HP chip, and did it ever smooth out tranny and shifting.
