I have a metal bi-fold aluminum ramp. I'd never try 2x10s. Too many horror stories. But some people use them for years without a problem. My ramps also have a cam-style safety strap to keep it snug to the tail gate. I haven't seen anyone eat it, but I did see a ramp go flying across the parking lot at the stealer. The really cool thing I like about my ramp is in a pinch it can be used as a ladder. BR>
I transport my ramp under the bike if I have the room. Though the last few big trips I made I actually put it either on top of the quad or I set it on top of the fender well. Less noise on the fender. With my stock tires it was no problem. However, the Klaws I have are a little wider. Kinda have to wiggle it getting in there.

Hello MWQBR>

What did you find out?

PS01, that is COLD! Is there snow at miami?

Found out it can be done fairly cheapThey even have a couple threads on how to do italong with which digital thermometer to buy at wally world, home depot or lowes. All for the price of around $25Some guys were saying the analog thermometer can be off as much as 15 degrees before the switch recognizes that it needed to kick on the heater. Guess that might be why if you put ours up to 90 degreesit might kick onDepending on your thermometer type, you only might need to hook up 2-4 wires. Might tackle this project this weekend.

If they are hot then there's some resistance, which there will be SOME resistance. You're carrying current through the fins (actually it's a switch.) If the contacts are really corroded you'll put resistance in there which will drop the voltage across the contacts which since it will still carry the same power (watts) will cause the current (amps) to raise up. You can try some electrical contact cleaner on them. They should be nice and shiny (usually they are a brass color, IIRC) when new.

I don't see why you couldn't run a digital. As long as it's set up for gas heat.

Skinner, you are pretty darn closeBut someone in the electrical businessI should have expected itLOL!

Agree with Skinner, don't use 2x10'sold neighbor did that and it was ugly, you could actually watch them flex as he rode up themplus there unless you put safety chains on them, you run the risk of them coming on the tailgate. Check out Harbor Freight they have aluminum ones chaeper than the dealers. When I use mine, I too just toss them under the quads. (of course, don't forget to strap them down

LOL!

I went to Home Depot and looked at what they had, didn't find the $20-$25 ones they talked about on the rv net threads. They did have some for $5 and upwards to $100. I'll have to right dow the number sthey posted and give it another try somewhere else.

I definitely wasnt goiing to ride them into the truck, just push them up the ramp. (Ive got a great loading of a dirt bike story if anyone is interested). I quit riding dirt bikes into the truck over 2 decades ago.

I didn't tackle this project this weekend. Finished putting in the new floor, layed down some silicone and fished out a bolt I dropped down the toilet when I was putting in the new toiletimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">

Then to top it off, as I was taking the trailer back to where I store it, it (trailer) decided that it didn't like the tread on one of the "brand new tires"and bubbled big time. Fortunately I saw it before it went kaboom!!! The old owner (my friend) came and helped me change the tire out, he said he would have it pro-rated at Big "O" because they are relatively newI told him thanks, but no thanks! I didn't want the same type of tire and that I was going to replace all the tires with a true trailer tire not a Big "O" LT tire. I still haven't fixed the damage from the blow out I had during Thanksgiving.

Age will do that to you

I would mount a portable winch in the back and use that insteadThat's how I loaded our quads on to the rack I built.

Atleast your staying busy. BR>
I just replaced all 4 of the tires on my trailer. One was seperating the tread for about 2 inches. It scared me enough to replace them all. The guy at the tire store said he would sell the other 3 as is used. BR>

Ok, here's a PSD question to put us back on courseBR>
My PSD is starting to grind while trying to start it up. Right now it could be a few things, starter/solenoid going bad, alternator going out, new batteries dying way to fast or the one I don't want to hearChipped tooth on fly wheel. Anyways, I am hoping for either the alternator or starter going bad. What are the pros and cons to aftermarket versus OEM? Shop is going to hopefully troubleshoot it tomorrow.

The only things mentioned that would make a noise at start up would be your starter and /or flywheel. Check to see, if for some reason, it's looseSounds dumb but it does happen. If you have issues with the starter that does not get repaired soon, it can damage the flywheel. The starter bendix can make noise and it can drag or not fully engage.

Don't waste your time and money on aftermarket starters like Kragen, etc. Spend the money for at least a factory rebuilt unit. yes, it's much more but those cheaply built starters will let you down many times and all at the wrong time. They never seem to stop working in your garage on a sat. morn when you have nothing better to doBR>

Thanks Creator.

I am actually hoping nothing is wrongbut think it is the bendix not fully engaging the fly wheel. When I mentioned after market, I was referring to one from say, DB Electric, found them over at dieselstop.net However, no one was saying the pros/cons of using it over OEM. I learned many years ago to stay away from Kragen or the othersThere is a reason why they give you a life time of free replacementsimg src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0"> You never stop replacing them

There are very few quality rebuilders out there and if you purchase from the dealer, they are all over the place to help with any issues you might have down the road. Exactly why I still let the dealer fix a lot of stuff on my PSDEven though I can change the starter I am turning into a turn key mechanicPaying someone else to solve the problem, so all I have to do is drive awayPlus with my daughter driving the PSD, I am fixing it so she is not strandedthat is much worse than me!

Dealer couldn't find anything wrong with the PSDNo teeth damaged/missing on the fly wheel, not codes that were thrown, everything checked outWhile I do feel good there is nothing wrongI just hope someday when I am in the middle of nowhereIt just decides not to work at all.

The good side of it is, the dealer didn't charge me a dime to do a diagnostic test on everything

Posted by: BlackandRedWarrior

Now that's rare. A dealer not charge for something.

Going to have some work done on the PSD, looking at adding the Bank's Six Gun and putting new tires on the trailer with 3 inch lift to match the riding level of the PSD.

Sorry to hear about your grandma.

Talked to a coworker yesterday who traded in his '97 F-250 (460 gasser) for a Chevy 1500 4x4. He has NOT been happy. Makes a weird clunking they say is "normal for 4x4s." He's owned 4x4 trucks and a Jeep. None ever did it. Saw pics of the news SDs. If he can find a buyer for his Chevy, he's getting one.

I'm looking to a trip here soon. I'm off Good Friday. Thinking about Miami. All my buddies locally want somewhere close. And I've got a couple of days of CompTime as I put in 32.5 hrs between Wed & Thurs. I'm still recovering...

I don't think we have Good Friday off, if we do maybe we'll hook up at Miami.

Wife starts her new job Monday, so hopefully we can start slowing down as a family and start riding/camping more. I would like to ride Hungry Valley before it gets to warm to ride down there.

Went to our company dinner last night; was recognized for the most Improved Person" over the last year(Not to hard when I started off not knowing anything anyways, got a nice little check with the certificate. Looking to upgrade the power package in my truck. Looking for a tuner with display on it for EGT, Boost and Oil/Transmission. I have some Banks on the PSD, but Banks 6 Gun PDA doesn't match the '01 PSDand from what I've seen on the 2" Module for the Banks 6 Gun it doesn't look like it's what I am looking for.

Anyways, I know Edge is out there, anyone else have suggestions?

Hello YamahaFanatic5,

The first year 6.0 did have it's problems like the other major 2 players did. Even had a friend who had his 6.0 bought back by Ford. He bought the next model year and hasn't had any problems and loves his truck. Anyways, there is always a lemon in the best of themA good friend has the '05 6.0 that thing is the bombHe had tweaked it with the Banks Six Gun and the 6.0 responds real well to it. Now we'll have to see what happens with the 6.4Hopefully, there won't be any major problems.

Round trip today to Chatsworth and back in the 550. Ohhh she pulls so nice. Pulled The Grapevine at 65 both ways, without a sweat. Ran 10+MPG each way, and I was running 70 from the I-5/99 split home. I'm just glad I'm not paying the $130 in fuel. Got pulled in for inspection at the scales nb at Magic Mountain. WTH! They just looked at DL and Reg. 1200 miles that truck hasn't even broken in the tires.

Posted by: rescuediver

No scale or anything else? Is your company logo on the side of it? Curious if they were looking at it from a private party perspective

Posted by: rescuediver

Well, I put the Edge Attitude on the PSD and didn't feel an improvement or get the same performance as the Bank's system on my truck. It changed the shifting point to where I wonder if I have a little bit of slipping going onEven lost 3 mpgTook it back to my mechanic. Took it for a ride and he didn't feel anything in the transmission. Of course he doesn't drive it everyday like I do. So, to tweak it a little more, we added the Evolution to it, to see if it does any better. It does have more responsetransmission feels betterBut mileage is still out there. Might take it all off and put the Bank's back on it and just have gauges added to it. (on top of the transmission gauge I had him add when all this upgrading started)

Yeah it was at the scales down there. Technically I think it's the Castaic Inspection Station. Pulled in with a decent load. Had 2 "gang boxes" (VERY large tool boxes), 4 large motor starters (about 700lb ea), a bin of wire (one guess is on the light side of 2000lb...I doubt that heavy), a plan table and some personal stuff we shuffled from a pickup to make room for stuff in it. Anyways, pulled into "Lane A" for loaded trucks, B & C were "Empty" lanes. I think they were turning the scale open sign off and on. Lots of trucks bypassing. Anyways, I roll over the scale and get a red light and the guy yelling at me to stop. "<Company Name> STOP!" "<Company Name> Pull to Bay 1 for inspection."

No logo but our CA# was on there. Boss isn't putting the company name on trucks anymore. So people won't know which trade or who we are I guess. Or just doesn't want to deal with trying to get the guy to make them.

Guy walked up and asked for my DL and Reg. Looked at them and said he'd be back in a minute, just checking paperwork. I just got the plates yesterday from DMV office. The originals were lost in the mail. Guy came back after about 5 minutes, handed them back to me and told me to have a nice day.

I'd like to have a pod with a tranny temp and possibly pyro gauge (curiosity there). That stock Ford tranny gauge never moved. It was in the "middle" as soon as I left the shop. I know it wasn't up over 100 degrees yet. I've heard they suck. They basically pop up like a turkey popup timer. Just to let you know it's well done.

Was nice to have a good cruise control. The 150 doesn't have it, the old 450 was an add on sucky thing. Was nice to just tap Coast or Set Accel to change speed down and up. Makes it easy to dial in the speed. Now if my GPS would work I can see how close the speedo is. The 450 is off by 5 MPH @ 60, or so.

It is nice having the gauges to see what the PSD is doingmy trannie takes about 5 miles or so to warm up to it's operating temp of around 135-140. Pyro is nice to watch how the temp shoots up under heavy acceleration. Haven't pulled my WW with it yet to see what it does under those conditons.

I would think with the loads you are pulling it would be a good addition to the truck.

That truck is built more for hauling than towing. It's got about a 4' frame extension on it (16' bed). The hitch is rated for 600# tongue, 10K towing. Tell me, please, how 600 is 10% of 10,000. We've got in the neighborhood of 9000 lbs available payload capacity. It's a longer WB and can out-turn the old 450. I think it can dang near turn as tight as the 150.

Now that ratio just doesn't add upThat's a pretty good turning radius for a truck that size

Unless you're pulling doubles. Which I would doubt with a 16' flatbed and that extension. I think it's got a really good wheel cut. I'll have to check it out one of these days. Ford took a lot of grief over the lackluster turning in the 450/550s. I think most MDTs run a 40-55 degree cut. This thing feels like the front end is going sideways when you are at close to lock.

I can't figure those flames out. Seems like a bit of BS to me. What's causing the ignition at the tail pipe? I can't believe that it comes through the pipe and muffler without going out. Plus that truck sounds like a big piece, knocking big time.

It did have some issues I found out later. I think it was a stuck injector. But ALL of the new diesels (6.4L PSD, 6.7L Cummins and LLM or whatever the current Duramax is) all have a DPM (Diesel Particulate Matter) filter at the tail pipe. They crank up the EGTs at the tail pipe by dumping fuel there to clean out the DPM filter. So it was blowing flames out the pipe because of the regen process and a crappily running truck. There's a recall with flash to fix it.

My mechanic's buddy has a new PSD and had it idling in his driveway, when he came back out side, his wife's Lexus' rear bumper was melted and laying on the driveway in a gob of goop!! I didn't personally see it, but I have no reason to doubt what I was told.

They aren't supposed to regen when idling, but they seem to be doing it. Low speeds around town is what will block up the DPM filter though.

Well, you were thought of. And I managed to stay behind my handlebars at all times. I need to get back in the groove for the trails. Didn't even attempt that trail again. lol. Though when I'm fresh and not sore barely riding the first day I want to try it downhill. I'm pretty sure it's really jacked. Two shots to get the lower section of S. Express and couldn't make it the upper section at all.

I was browsing past this site and thought I smelled sompin peculiar...sure enuf...Hoss is busy with his monthly stalking.

howdy y'all. haven't even tried to back-read any posts.

HEY, I just fixed a PSD problem recently. I had one cylinder out, and also had a check engine symbol. 2 different problems. One was EBP (exhaust back pressure). There's a brass colored pipe from the front of the engine running to the right front cylinder head/block area. flare nut fittings. take it off and clean it out. away goes check engine symbol.

The other problem was UVC (Under Valve Cover) wiring. I removed the valve covers and there's a wiring harness for the injectors that likes to come loose. Ford has a little plastic shim that snaps into the wiring harness connector and keeps the tension on the connection so it won't work loose. Or sometimes the actual harness needs replacing, or pins on the connector get fried. Now ya know!!

Sup peoples!
So as some of you may or may not know. Im currently UNemployed.
Ive kinda been throwing around the idea of taking up auto detailing for a while now, but now seems to be the right time...
So yah. I just placed a pretty large order of detailing supplies from autogeek.net....
Well see how this goes. Its gonna be pretty hard at first and a deffinate learning process but i do know ALOT already. Though i still have alot more to learn.

Wish me luck...

GOOD LUCK LJBR>
Are you just specializing in car detailing (waxing, buffing, shampooingor are you doing some mechanical stuff too?

Posted by: rescuediver

Well hello there ConfusedoneHow ya been? Threads been kinda slow, looks like we all had a change in life around the same timeGlad you were able to fix the PSD

My PSD goes in Monday for a rebuild of the fabulous 4R100 transmissionFinally went out on me at 139,000 miles on it. 1 and 2nd gear went kaput, and the torque converter is slipping big time! After much research decided to go with the Suncoast kit to rebuild it upShould be just about bullet proof when it's done.

good luck with tranny. I was doing some posting on thedieselshop.com and there seem to be a lot of tranny options and expert rebuilders.

LJ, nuthin like being an entrepreneur (or entre-poor). Don't give your time away. I used to detail cars back in 81-82. And I did it on weekends at the auto dealer for a few years before that, when I was in high school. make sure the glass is perfect; no streaks. tires shiny. we used to use engine shampoo and a garden hose to clean greasy engines. no pressure washer required. Then we'd clear-coat them. you sure can turn a 3 into a 9.

If you need work, Vancouver is in a massive work shortage situation right now. jobs all over, especially trades and construction.

It's life was decentWish it would of lasted at least another 10,000 or so miles. But I have averaged approx. 23,000 miles per year on it and tow a trailer quite often. I am looking forward to the next oneHopefully, it will last the remainder of the truck's life (which is also my life

I visit that forum quite often too. What I have seen thoughis too many people point out how their product is so much better than the next guys product. Sometimes I wonder if some of the posters are not being paid to bash everyone elses. The bashing shows up waaayyyyyyy to much for me!!

I had already decided I liked Sun Coast before I talked to my mechanic and he quickly mentioned Sun Coast tooSo, it made up my mind. Also, he's been running the re-build in his transmission for 4 hard years and it's still running strong.

The game was unreal yesterday. That course is something to play on. Never thought I would pay so much to play a round of golf but it was worth every dime spent. I guess it's one of those things you have to experience to believe.

It was very windy since the tradewinds were blowing about 20-30 mph but it didn't seem to affect the play as much as I expected. I did adjust for it before every shot but it worked out good. Shot 7 over for 18 holes which I think ties my personal best and on this course I was blown away. I kept pulling shots out my rear all day long The guys I played with weren't all that good (and need to learn how to add ) but have a great time. Going to try and play again for 9 holes this afternoon and see what trouble I can get into

Did you use balls that had wings on them to glide in the windHhmmm, I seem to remember that people who can not play wellHave a hard time with their adding skills

I here people here complain about paying to play at Pebble Beach and not enjoy their gameI've never played on the course, but have seen it a few times and know my green fees would not even start to pay for the divits I would leave behind

Well I received my PSD yesterday after having a Sun Coast transmission put in it. All I can say is WHAT a differenceIt locks up great, no iffy what gear does it want to be in around town, no torque spinning. Pulls the trailer great! I can even spin the tires from a dead stop

To bad that is a nice sturgeon. I think down here a keeper needs to be 48-72".

Back on topic. Today I was on my way home from work and the PSD died not once, but twice. Once coasting to a red light and the other making a turn and accelerating. Thought it could be fuel related. I know I should changed that fuel filter 100 miles ago Anyway, limp it home and put the ol' diagnostic on it and it reads a CMP code. So, down to Ford to retrieve one, on dieselstop.com they say they go for around $170-$200I paid $29.00 at the local ford dealership. Anyways, wasn't that hard to replace and the truck seems alright now. At least it didn't die again on it's maiden run. I think I will get that fuel filter replaced this week though.

had it been like hiccuping? be driving along and it just sorta dies then starts back up and sometimes its idling and just shuts off? thats the shizz thats happenin with the green psd. its annoyin but don't have a code reader.

Posted by: rescuediver

From what I've read, it certainly can be the CMP. On mine, it just died on the way home from work. No kind of warning. It did take a couple of extra cranking seconds to get it going again. After the second one, I couldn't get over 25mph. So I limped home (hoping I catch every light which I did). While in the driveway I tried to keep the rpms around 2,000 or so but once there, the power would start falling fast. This is when I thought it was a fuel related issue. That was until I pulled the code off the truck and it showed a CMP code. After reading about it on dieselstop.com I was relieved it was something that was not major and after talking to the local dealership it was only $29 plus change. It took me longer to get the 10mm bolt loosened than it did to put the new one in. Anyways, here's a article on it

CMP info

thanks for the cmp info, I have a 99 super duty and it runs great but it gives me a heads up, it has 124,000 and still strong

Your welcomeWe do give out helpful information in this thread too

I have 141,000 mile on mineand just had the transmission rebuilt. Outside of that, I can not complain about the PSDit's been a great truck for me.

Posted by: rescuediver

I might add that I am going to heed the advice of the author in the thread I posted and put a second one in my PSD. Also going to carry a 10mm offset boxed end wrench. That way, I have it ready if it decides to go out when I am off the beaten path.

Dang. You're having all kinds of issues lately. First the tranny. You're gonna end up with a nearly new truck.

It's ok. I kinda like the old forum. Don't care much for things when all the forums look the same. Some things still need to be worked on. Lots of issues on Friday when I was hanging out in The Spin Zone.

I know, the wife thinks I am doing some of this on purposeOf course, I would never do anything like that

I really can't complain about my PSDIt's a daily driver and has yet to leave me strandedOf course, it's gone out in my driveway

Posted by: rescuediver

Friend is thinking about upgrading to a F450 and selling his '05Nice truck and it would be hard to turn it down, but it sure does have a lot of "bling" to itI don't think I could handle taking it off-road

rescue driver, have you changed your front wheel bearings yet? I had to change my driver side at 110,000 miles and they say they go out around 100,000 so Im waiting to change passenger side now, I talked to the dealer and asked them why the wheel bearings go out at around 100,000 and he told me, he thinks its because of the bigger snow plows, I told him thats weird, because I dont have a plow on mine lol, hell of an excuse, but it didnt work in my book

No, but when I do I'll look into the aftermarket so I can just repack them. I have done the ball joints and on it's 4th set of shocks though. I think in the last 8 months or so I have put around $8000 into the PSD. Some for goodiesand some for maintainence

Posted by: booboobear

to let you know they are a sealed bearing, it costs $300.00 per side, I know I almost fell over lol, I dont know if the after markets are greasable, but please let me know because I will switch both out because I know my passenger side will be going pretty quick because Im at or around 124,000 miles

Posted by: rescuediver

I might see my mechanic tomorrow, if I do I ask him about it. I did see on e-bay at $219.00

Yo!

Pops called me last night told me the truck was running really rough but was still running.. He also said the trouble light was on. He went to plug his predator in and NOTHING. The thing didn't even power up. I told him to try it in the jeep to make sure the predator didn't go bad so he did. He said it powered up fine.
He also went through all the fuses just to be safe. They were all fine.
This morning we went out and the first thing i did was unplug the batts to reset everything. Same thing except the truck seems to be running fine. Still teh predator doesn't light up.

Any Ideas. Im stumped.

Um something else...

We found a 1996 Collectors Edition Vette in an old ladys garage under a cover today. Basically its barely been driven in the last 10 years.. Only 1000 miles been put on it since 1999. Its only got 23000 miles total. My uncle told me it still smells new inside. Last time it was driven was in October to be smogged. Carfax checks out good as well. Shes the original owner.
She said any reasonable offer basically. My dad is really interested in picking this car up. Any reason NOT to? Obviously wed trailer it back...

I really think he just wants something faster than mine.

Bah.

Did you go riding?

Posted by: powerstroke01

Got somewhere with the truck.
The one fuse dad said he checked he didnt.. I also didnt even see it in the fuse list. bah.
So I replaced that one. The OBD fuse. hahahh

Anyways. I just went out and drove the truck. the code was P1316.... Most likely a wiring harness.. So the PSD is down for a few days.
